FYI Mechanic said he needed to dislodge exhaust and transmission to get to top bolt for removal and replacement.
May be of use to someone on here.

You need a better mechanic, or someone fitted the starter incorrectly in the past!
E30 starter motor is secured by nuts on the engine bay side. Bolts are torx type, and need to be held with a torx ring spanner, if they insist on turning.
