I Have an e30 with no tax, insurance or MOT, and want to transport it nearly 180 miles.
Is it much too heavy to tow on a trailer?
I have a 318i 4dr and a 320i touring both with towbars but I doubt it would do them much good to tow that much weight. The garage my dad works for will do it for Ԛ£1 a mile (each way)
Is there a cheaper way?

be careful as if you do it yourself then you may well not be able to use one of the e30s to tow it - the car PLUS trailer that you are towing has to be under 90% (iirc) of the weight of the car towing this lot.
i think that there are exclusions, maybe braked trailers? (the rule is there cos the car must be able to stop car + trailer + other car in reasonable distance i believe).
rog was the best bet for this but he never comes online any more...

yeah thats what i figured. the touring is heavier than the 318i coupe i want to move but I wouldnt tow anything heavier than a nissan micra with it. its not good for cars (in fact Ive never towed anything in my life!)

Join the Rac or AA at the cheapest rate which includes recovery.
Disconnect or remove something that they will not be able to fix at the roadside.
Call them out and get them to take you "home".
Mate of mine did this when he bought his brother in laws car.
RAC "recovered" the car - POOLE (Dorset) to WAKEFIELD (Yorks).

Yep, I can do it got 4 trucks and we only charge 1 way. We match up return loads. It would be Ԛ£180. Let me know if you want it moved.

cheers! that sounds extremely reasonable, as soon as i find a garage to put it in, i will get in touch. (parking spaces are at a premium here let alone garages)

If the car is roadworthy, insure it with Norich Union's day insurance (Ԛ£10), book an MOT near your home and drive it home.
Or, insure it and tow it with a rigid bar behind the touring.
I did this a couple of weeks ago for a 100 mile tow. No problems whatsoever.

So how does this work Brian. Will NU insure a car just for one day? It would be useful if you wanted to buy a project car and then work on it for a while before taxing, moting and insuring at a later date?

You can do it cheaper, but not legal. If VOSA stop you its hire and reward so you won't be insured properley. If your over the limit you can get fined and points. My insurance is over Ԛ£12,000 and also we are experienced at moving cars, We are stopped on average once a month and checked out. The police are on the look out for this kind of thing now.

Specifically says on the site that you can't get a tax disc, because the insurance certificate is a self printed document. (i.e. Could be fake).Jon_Bmw wrote:Don't suppose you know if you can get a tax disk via these day insurance schemes?Brianmoooore wrote:www.dayinsure.com I learnt about them off this forum, and have used them a couple of times now.
