As you all know....my engine is coming out! And Ive asked the questions and had the answers.....as to what engine to go for! Obviousley the bigger the better! I said to the wife this morning, " I Might put in a V12 5.0 M70 engine!"

But one thing that never gets mentioned is insurance, tax or fuel. The other half said straight away when I came out with the above comment.
"How are you going to insure a 5.0ltr BMW?"

ooops, never thought of that! So the dilemma is.....................


How much more would it be to run a bigger engined E30???
Questions to all zoners with the 3.5's and above!


Also would it be more to insure a 318 with a 2.5 engine than a 325??

Any comments from anyone welcome, its just never spoke about!

well if it was a 2.7 its all internal mods
so could still be seen as a 2.5.

your best option would be to call an insurance brokers
that deal with modified cars and get a quote.

I cant see a difference with it previously being
a 1.8 as opposed to a 2.5
so long as you uprate the brakes and suspension too.

think what the insurance companies usually do is for example you want a 325i engine in your car they'll class it as a 325i on insurance so you'll pay for what you'd insure an original one. Probably pay a little more for the 3.5 as its a diff engine and its not found on the E30's so I'd get a quote first before doing it. How much you paying at the moment?

I thought there were specialist insurance co's that will insure modified cars, doubt if you called directline they would entertain you, they consider alloy wheels modification!

Bahrain has a nice third party system, they ask ''is it sport or normal', you say ''eh?'' they say ''two or four doors'', i say ''two'', they say ''thats a sport, 150pounds'' (equivilent) i say ''what if it is four door? '' they say ''100 pounds!''

so a 2 door ford Ka is 150 quid, a four door 760il is 100 quid!

simple system!

Never had any direct experience but i always had the impression that putting a 2.5 in a 318i DOESN'T make it a 325i in the insurers eyes. The resulting car was a mongrel and therefore more expensive to insure than an original 325i.

i guess that depends on the insurers bob. i did get quotes for a turbo on my z3 before it went, and they decided the increase on the power change - which is fair enough as no capacity change. if you had (for example) a 318iS and upgraded the engine to a 2.5, the hp change isn't that great, 35hp odd, so they may decide its not that much a risk. hmmm, of course then i'd expect the insurer to insure a 325i for the same, lol. anyway i mean, it depends on the insurer, that's it!

regarding steve's issue:
i suspect that 'proper' insurers will do it on the bhp change, not the capacity - e.g. if you took a 316 and put a 2 litre engine in it, you could have put maybe one of those old mondeo 2 litres with about 120hp or whatever, or an s2000 engine with 240hp!

do they sound like they should be the same insurance?

Steve, just make some calls to insurers. Different insurers apply different formulae to work out premiums & assess risk.

Avoid any of the big direct names as you will be wasting your time.

Adrian Flux are an obvious choice but not always the cheapest. Footman James, Lancaster, HIC, Sureterm Direct, Direct Choice are a few others.

When I declared the mods on my E30 with privilege insurance, I was asked about the power of the vehicle and to list the upgraded parts.

With Flux I also got asked about my vehicle history -so they could assess if I had come from a 950 pop fiesta to 300bhp Soarer.

When I insured the Soarer with them, i delcared the alloys & the tints, i was then inundated with modified vehicle report forms to complete where they even asked the size & make of tyres on the car etc. If you go for a transplant some insurers may insist on you getting a report done on the car too.

it can make a difference too if you have done the work yourself as they take the attitude you are less likely to be a cock if you have invested your own time creating the car rather than being a cheque book modder who could go silly and crash it shortly thereafter.

But before you start tearing the M40 lump out, I would get some realistic quotes as it could become prohibitvely expensive.

I have four different engines in mind, so I will do the ringing around with the four formula's and see what comes out best!

I'm 23, with 4 years NC (by the time I go about renewing my insurance anyway - Easter), had a crash way back in Nov 2001, work in an office, park the car on a drive way in London, do about 3000m a year-not sure if thats right might do more but it is something he siad they'd keep track of.

I asked whether it would be cheaper to insure a straight up 325i, and the guy said it doesn't matter as they insure the car by its engine alone not whether its been converted winkeye

335's are very thirsty!

2.7's are a touch better than a 2.5 on juice

thats pretty good quote, i paid Ԛ£1000 TPFT on my cab with everything declared and thats with 3 yrs no claim and was 24 at the time.

Risk wise my car is classed as an E34 535(group 17). All mods declared including 30bhp increase. I'm 31, 7 or 8 years NCB, 1 x SP30. I'm with HIC TPF+T for about 360-380 quid.

They were good and gave a good quote on a r5 gt turbo but when you go over the mailage you quoted (up to 3000) the charge you. they wonted Ԛ£600 for goinging 300miles over the agread mailage.

might be a good idea to agree a highmailage and pay a little more at the begining rather than gat stung when you go over at the end.
