Does it have to be working for an MOT?
They never checked it before I don't think.

Not for something that old.... They normally just set to zero then test them "as it is at time of test"
More modern stuff has stricter MOT rules
I think mr Moore or someone on here did some using e34 parts but the manual adjusters work better and lots have been retro fitted.... Mine is one!

Headlamp beam adjusters don't have to work on any car for an MOT. All that is tested is that the beams are adjusted to within narrow limits (tightened up a few years ago). If they are found to aim too low, the tester is allowed to turn any adjuster in the cabin to try to raise them.
I see no point in changing failed hydraulic adjusters for manual ones. All that is required is to screw outwards the centre steel rod of the hydraulic adjusters a few turns, to bring the aim into the range of the fine adjuster built into the old hydraulic cylinders. This has the advantage of never seizing up, unlike the manual ones.
E34 electric adjusters are an easy retrofit into an E30. E36 can be used as well, with a little more work.

Found out today, I must have previously removed all the under bonnet equipment for the headlight aim adjust system.
What should I now purchase ? Where can I get from (web links ) ?
