Hi
Just bought another e30 witch has a m40 engine not the m10. Research saying it's the worst engine that they did. Don't realy want to do another engine swap was just going to tune this one. Is this true . Don't want to spend time and money on it otherwise . Thanks

First time out in it today. To be far it's not as bad as I thought. It's a auto and kick down works fine it goes pretty well. Believe they get starved of oil that why there very tappity .will try and clean oil spray pipe over the cams witch have been told get blocked tomo . Failing that will cost up a top end rebiuld I thinks

M40's are a cracking little lump have no power, rattles their tits off and uses shit loads of fuel and takes as much abuse you can give them.Pretty bomb proof engines :)

M40 1.8 engine isn't bad for what it is. Gives a decent amount of power and fuel economy for its time, and is pretty much indestructible. Not a patch on the M42 that was developed from it though.
The tapping isn't really down to oil starvation - it's BMW's first attempt at self adjusting tappets, and it wasn't as successful as it could have been. After 60k miles or so, they will tap under certain conditions. It doesn't cause any damage or appreciable performance loss, so if you can put up with the occasional "sounds like your bottom ends gone, mate" comments, it's not really a problem.
I quietened down one engine in a daily driver once by running it with diesel spec. oil in the sump for a couple of thousand miles to clean things up a bit.

if served regality and properly maintained they are excellent engines. You could always look to free up a few more horses with a remapped ecu chip..

The M40 donk isn't too bad at all. I had a manual 316i about 15 years ago. A 1990 "G" Plate that went reasonably well and was surprisingly good on fuel. The later M43 (from '94 onwards so not an E30 engine) is, barring their love of a head gasket, so much superior though. Even better is the M42/M44 which is both quicker and more economical.
