fingers crossed this is in the correct place (mods, please move if not).

was talking to a mechanic mate today & some how the convo got onto the likes of wynn's engine flush (god knows how) & he was telling me that he has never used it,

instead he uses the oil for a diesel engine for a few week's to "flush" the engine out (he's got an m52b28 in his e30) every year, he says that unlike engine flush it doesn't "rip" the carbon deposits off, it slowly wears the down due to the oil having a detergent in it that helps to get rid of carbon deposits in the engine.

so, is this true?? or is he talking bollox??

any one ever done this?? please bare in mind i have never heard of this in all my years around cars in general :o:

I had a similar conversation with my mate who is a mechanic. he said some oil flushes are quite harsh and can damage engines due to lack of lubrication, he had one instance of a lump of gunge blocking a turbo oil feed line after a 'flush'and scrapping a turbo.
Generally he said the lower the mileage, the less chance of engine damage.
He recommended 'Forte' brand flush, personally I think it would be better to do more regular oil changes, some of the current 20k mile oil changes are excessive in my opinion.

I've used diesel oil for a thousand miles or so several times. It comes out a lot blacker than equivalent normal oil would after that amount of miles.

Depends entirely how much muck is in your engine.
Short answer is when the oil looks filthy.

I find modern synthetics do a good enough job on their own, as long as your not driving like a granny :D

They do indeed. I'm not recommending this for general usage, just for cleaning out a neglected newly acquired engine before servicing it in the future with the love it deserves.

This is interesting, would this be also advisable for seasonal cars that do very few miles?..

In the last 5 years I have likely done less than 3,000 miles in my cabby.
The oil is changed every 12 months (good qualify synthetic plus filter etc) but as she is now coming out most weekends(the promise of summer) would a few hundred miles of diesel oil do her some good?

Not in the slightest. You already use a good oil, and change it far more often than necessary, so there shouldn't be any deposits in your engine to clean out.
