my m30b35 engine runs rough on first start up until warm, and as per a previous thread, i was advised it might be the blue temp sensor, have looked on line to purchase a new one but I'm a little unsure as I don't know which year my engine is? is that relevant? or is any sensor for the e34 be suffice?

The same sensor is used across many BMWs and other makes.
Beware of cheap sensors from a land a few thousand miles away. They will be correct at a couple of temperatures, but don't 'track' properly between the two.

Is a rough start up the classic sign of a dud blue temp sensor or could very poor mpg alone be a sign?
thanks

OK, so drove my 30 to the bodyshop yesterday- seemed a little hesitant at times, would the blue temp sensor be the cause for that as well?
Have ordered a new blue temp sensor, so time will tell!!

well i disconnected all the connectors in the engine bay, cleaned them all off and plugged them back in- seems to be running better?
but it is booked in with a specialist near me who is going to check it over, check the timing etc etc
will pm you regarding the sensor

well that embarrassing moment when they the specialist fixes your running problem in 30 seconds!
the fault was the earth! I hadn't noticed that the terminal connection on the battery was loose!
but on the bright side as id driven it there, i let him take the car in and fully inspect it, he found a few little niggles but on the whole seems all good! phew!
can at least drive the car with a bit more confidence now!
