I've seen nice Tech 2 sports change hands regularly now for over £12k.

Do they have more reach or are prices starting to level ?

I think prices will continue to rise as there are less cars on the road. Classic cars are an investment.

I hope they don't to be honest.

Firstly I have no commercial interest in e30 values, unlike Pete and Trevor etc.

I'd prefer it if prices remained as they are or fall back, it's nice to have a cheap and cheerful hobby with fun money, I think i'd probably not bother if they became as expensive as Mk1+2 escorts for example.

I'm not tight or poor and don't need to buy one as an investment, i just enjoy having a cheap l hobby which isn't going to get me in trouble with the wife when she checks the bank account !!

Hardly Jim, you've started a thread having a pointless rant about tech 2 sport prices no doubt spurned on by the for sale thread of the silver sport and you've also had a dig at two other zoners when you are not whiter than white yourself.

LOL, i don't know what i've walked into here but car prices are not going to go down, that's just nonsense, its not a trend, its 30 and 40 year olds buying the hot hatches etc from there youth to enjoy now insurance prices aren't mad, the less choice they have the more the cars will be worth.

I did buy mine as an investment as well as something fun to drive in the summer.

A cheap hobby, what planet are you on, restoring these things costs a fortune, by an xbox, thats a cheap hobby!

Well it is on topic because you are moaning about pricing and keeping the hobby cheap yet you are not totally innocent when it comes to asking top money for things.

Very true they can cost a lot to restore properly, as with any classic car. However, you can run them on a shoe string still with plenty of traders and people braking with all the spares you could wish for.

Got to say it seems parts prices for basic stuff has doubled since I got my first in the mid 2000s.

Parts like Mtech bits and well anything above basic trim seem to be 5-10X the prices they were then.

I remember £300 Mtech 2 kits, the Mtech 1 kit I'm using on mine was £120 complete back in 2008.

Bad plan, in the event of rain all the mincers will drown, exterminating demand.

I can't see it ever slowing down. Its not just e30s its any "good" pre 90 car.

Ive been into classic cars for about 10 years now, I like it because its cheap, easy, fun, and keeps me off the streets as they say. Certainly not for any financial return!

Ive always been a big believer that there is NO way of EVER making a profit on a car. Ok sure, if your names Mike or Ed, maybe. But thats not how enthusiasts work. To me, a car is only finished when it can no longer be driven on the road. Then you park it up and start a new project.

I have a passion for classics, fixing them, breaking them, driving them hard, keeping them on the road, and attending shows.

Unfortunately for us "petrol heads" its getting harder and harder. We all know theres no property left to buy, so whats the next most expensive commodity? Cars. Classic Cars.

Im concerned that what was once a niche hobby for us weirdos and anoraks has become an investment market.

These people buying 12k e30s, are they in the shed every night developing their toys? No, they have absolutely no intention of getting their hands dirty. And thats not cool.

I like classics for the way they drive, the way they feel on the limit. Its been brought up on here recently about how, when taken on a test drive the e30 m3 didn't feel magic.... Of course it fucking didn't! Its only on the limit you get the magic. Theres not a lot of people left who can afford to push an m3.

I promised myself a long time ago that i would never own a post 90 car. but the way things are going I may not have a bloody choice!

I guess the other thing is the ease of working on them. These old cars can be fixed just by looking at them for a while, then getting out a 13mm spanner. Job done.

These days not even the mechanics in the dealer know how the "new model" works.

Each component for modern cars have been developed separately in a different corner of the globe. Literally there is no one who can fix a modern car, simply because they do not know how they work.

The last thing is price, typically old cars are cheap. New cars are expensive. Anyone can get finance on a new car these days.... If your happy to pay your whole months salary on a fucking image, thats fine. We all know every new Audi driver works at a call centre.

I want to own my car thank you! And I want to be able to fuck with it if I want.

Its quite sad really ..... I think once a month for the last 5 years when checking car prices I've said "hmmm.....looks like Ill never own one of these..."

I blame hipsters for making old things cool,
Rich folk for not having the brains for the stock market,
and the government for selling all the countries land and property to overseas investors.

I also blame anyone who thinks they can "fix up" a car and make a profit.

Thats what most of the e30s I've seen for sale recently are...

Bodged up chav wagons. Most of the time they can't even be arsed to remove the alpina reps.

I'm in it for the long haul. Fed up waiting for my bonds to mature, I purchased a 4 door 320i as an investment.

I'm still eagerly waiting for its value to escalate. 10 years ago it must've been worth the value of its tax disc, battery and petrol in the tank. Now? Just the battery and petrol in the tank as you can't sell it taxed. :(

Who knows, I have a sport which is probably devalued as much as it could be - stripped interior, cage, engine swap etc.

However, all the E30's I have bought and subsequently sold, have always been at a higher price.

Sorry Jim but all you talk about is money and values and come across tight to be honest.

Most people would be happy their little e30 is worth a bit more these days. I certainly am, i might break even on mine when its done :o:

I guess that's why I don't like it. (the idea of inflated prices profit etc)

To me your sport would be worth more than a standard one. But it's not. So in a weird way that makes me assume that the person buying these cars doesn't have any intention on enjoying them. It's pure profit.

But then again I have a very narrow minded approach to cars and their purpose, also how and why they should be enjoyed.

Sorry again for the rant guys :)

I know not all Audi drivers work at call centres. I'm just jeolous :P All my cars are shit and in pieces.

To keep us on topic with more bullshit.....

I feel pistonheads has a small part to play. Read a recent "one to watch" topic recently about fiat coupe's..... Checked it out, as ive always fancied one, and correct, they're certainly on the up. Even more so I'm sure after thousands read the article all looking to make a few quid.
