Temperature Guage problem

My temperature guage gets up to the middle fine and then it will ping to three quarters then ping back, then and keep doing this back and forth. Some other days it is fine and just stays centered (even when im hooning it to see if it is overheating) Could this be most likely a problem with the guage its self? The engine doesnt feel like it is overheating, and the coolant isnt getting eaten up. Its the fact it steadily gets up to temp, and sometimes goes erratic. Has anyone experienced this before?

Remove the whole cluster, and tighten up the small brass nut on the back, behind the temp. gauge.
