Nice little article in the current "Classic car weekly", confirming what we all on here already know - the E30 was by far the best car of its era, and still cuts it as an everyday car today.

Jeezus Andy, have you been drinking that dodgy lidl wine again?

I remember an old camels ear I used to service when at college, the paint had shrunk due to mechanical car washes and was full of cracks, it looked a right mess, belonged to an old geezer who used to regularly bump it up kerbs, new tyres and hammering the steel rims round again was common place :D

I like Cavaliers especially the diplomat. My dad had quite a few Mk2 and Mk3s.

MK3 I think I had a SRi hatch for a good few years
I had a Mk3 SRi for 2 years. Was a great car for a 19 year old but felt crap once I'd bought my 325i.
I can remember a mate almost sh1tting himself in the Cavalier once we hit about 90mph but the same section of 'driveway' at 110+ felt fine in the 325i - he didn't even realise and was surprised we were going that fast.
My SRi was a '92 and the 325i is a '91... the quality difference was worlds apart.

My brother had a Cav V6 until it got rear ended. I nearly fitted the V6 to my SRi, but saw sense and bought the 325i.

My old man worked for Vauxhall, I had an ' 82 mk2 1.6GL, an '83 mk2 SR and an '89 mk3 jelly mould 1.6 GL when it was still quite a new car, about 3 years old. Loved the SR as it had alloys and Recaros and I was 18, first 'sporty' car. All good cars, but miles behind BMW in terms of quality.

If they were any good there'd be more left on the roads today.

This is my thoughts, E30's are still quite common, but a MK3 Cavalier is a rare sight, and equally, most comparable Ford scrap is equally rare.

There are still quite a few Golfs around though.

Saw a Scirocco this morning, finished in a shitty gold colour, holding up the morning traffic.

I had a Scirocco GT years ago, mint condition, but desperately slow, proper wheezy 1.6, still not sure what was GT about it!

I've had three scirroccos in my time, at the time my GT2 1.8 carb seemed to go quite well. Still prefer look of them to the new massive ones!

Spotted this a few weeks ago fresh from resto at a local show. 1.6 SR, just like my old one back in '90.

Nice car, but it's no E30.

I have a soft spot for mk2 and mk3 cavaliers. A 1.8 SRi hatch mk2 was my first fuel injected car and i bloody loved it - had recaros and was a far better car than the XR3i which at the time was still stupidly expensive to insure for what it was. I replaced the cav with my first e30 though and it was a much better car.

The 2.0 mk3 SRi though i really liked but never got to own one as i was too into e30s by then and theyve pretty much all gone now.
I had a K plate 2.0 cdi for a few months but it was too old-man for me then, plus it leaked in when it rained and the gearbox was crap - i sold it and replaced it with an f plate E30 which i liked a lot more.

its not a nice car but a steaming pile of shite. My cousin is fixated with these and is on a forum called "Mk2Cav.com" or something.

He drives an F reg hatchback for a daily 1.6 it is. Has 2 other hatchbacks in his back passage also! One is a resto with a redtop to go in.

His only saving grace is the VXR monaro he has

A mate of mine is mid way through restoring a Scimitar (an 1983 SE5a I'm told). The resto is running into thousands and has taken him years...i will never know why.

horrid looking turd.

Lovely car, always had a secret hankering for one, didn't they have the Essex V6 in them?

Regarding that Cav above, I like the full resto but retaining of the original, all be it slightly battered, number plate

Hands up whose Vauxhall had the standard fitment squeaky clutch pedal, my MK1SR did and my MK2GTE, also my Dads MK2 Cav estate.

I'll start..

Early SE4's had the old Straight Six Zephyr / Zodiac lumps Rog. Later SE4 and the SE5 cars had the 3.0 essex which ran to the early SE6's. Later SE6B's had the 2.8 cologne V6.

I've NEVER been a Pauxhall man. I've dabbled from time to time but after a string of Mk1 and 2 Granadas back in the 80's I bought a 3.0 Senator. The engine was great, better than any of Fords V6's BUT...... it was a fucking piece of shite in build quality compared to the Mk2 Granada! I sold it after no longer than a year IIRC. And bought a Scorpio which was screwed together very well by comparison.

Fast forward to 2006 and I was eligible for a "business needs" company car. They were Astras. I had 3 on the spin and they were woeful compared to say a Focus.

Quite right, my MK1 Astra SR was ace, for heap, it handle brilliantly, but by contrast my MK2GTE was mint and well looked after but handled like shit.

For the record the e30 wasn't given massive praise over the course of its production life. Handing and steering were normally criticised. But then look what it was up against.

The e39 was a car which always had great reviews.
