viscous fan

Hi there I am looking for your option on same I replaced the viscous fan on my 1993 318i now my question is that when I start the car from cold the fan comes on straight away is this normal or should it only come on when car get hot?thanks.

The fan always spins, so that's normal. It spins faster when the engine gets to an operating temperature (half-way mark) on the gauge.

thanks for your reply now it spins fully from a cold engine and spins normal when it get up to temperture half way mark?

You will know if your viscous is good by the way it sounds like an aeroplane when you first start and rev it!
So yes they are "activated" when you first start the car then it goes into normal spin mode until needed

Brand new viscous couplings also tend to loosen up a bit after several hours of service. It's not unusual for a new coupling to give the impression that it's locked.

thanks lads yes it sounds like a aeroplane when engine starts up then spins normal when car warms up just thought it would only cut in when it got warm thanks again to all for your response.
