hi new to the forum and i just bought a 1985 bmw e30 316, not 316i, but i suspect the engine may be out of a e21 315 because the documents say 1573cc not 1760cc and i know this may seem weird but portugal gets lots of weird engined cars like 320is etc, how can i confirm which one it is? i can post photos and ive got all engine numbers.

Welcome to the Zone. The engine size should be stamped on the block next to the engine number.

I think you will find a 316 is a 1600cc and a 316i is a 1800cc

The opposite actually . Engine number for M10 engines is on a 'boss' on the rear edge of the block just above the starter motor.
