I've got quite a loud layshaft noise once the cars been ran up to temp but pretty quiet when cold.
I don't use the car apart from in the summer months so was wondering a thicker viscosity gear oil would benefit.
I recall changing the gearbox oil about 5 years ago with some cheap 75w/90.
Any recommendations about something which may quieten it down when hot?

Usual grumble regarding gearbox's is that the change is stiff and heavy when cold, fixed by using ATF instead of gear oil....but I guess that will not help you much!
However, gearbox's like to see clean oil every couple of years or so,it should be every inspection 2,as this removes the water that the oil collects via condensation.
So I would suggest that a decent quality 75w/90,swapped more fequently, will help a bit.
