I bought a wheel off ebay and the thread is pretty knackered, I have raised a complaint to get a refund but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to fix it as the wheel is in ok condition?

I am wondering if its safe to use, is there a way to check, ie if it goes on and doesn't move about it will be ok?

I think he means the splines? Otherwise the thread on the column for the fastening nut is knackered I guess

If the thing will slide on and is held tight by the retaining nut,I cannot see a problem.

Wrap some tin foil around the spline on the column, press it into the ridges and fold the edges over so it doesn't ruffle up.. it should feel a lot better...

This steers the car right? I'm damned if I'd be compromising with bits of foil!!!!!

LOL at the tin foil. I am not compromising on anything, my daughter and wife sit in the car.

Maybe I will try it at the weekend and see. I have had no response from the ebayer!

It's a safety critical component, so there's no way we can recommend that you use it on here, but the loads on steering components are surprisingly light, especially at speed, and any failure would be likely to happen when manoeuvring at very low speed.
The splines are a taper, so as long as the securing nut doesn't reach the end of its threads, the wheel should be secure and give no problem, but I'd recommend checking that the nut is tight occasionally, and still not bottomed out if you tighten it further. DON'T include foil. If this breaks up and works its way out, the wheel will become less secure.
Can't be worse than the eighty odd miles I once had to drive an iS with a pair of mole grips as the steering wheel!
