IIRC, at some point in the M10's life, the direction of rotation of the distributor was reversed.

All M10 E30s were the same. The change was in 1980 when the E21 316 went from 1600 to 1800 cc. They changed to electronic ignition at the same time .

I'm fairly sure all M10 E30's had the same donk,

my first turd was an 86' 316 (the 318i was out of reach)
how i longed for an Injection instead of the Pierburg drama's and 15mpg :( they were all were blessed with 1800cc's

Incidentally Mick my first E30 was a 2 door in Zinnobar red with keep fit windows, reg was C256JBR (may have been C257JBR) not far of the production line from the turd your breaking !

All E30s were factory fitted with the later version, but plenty of cars will have had replacement engines.
