Just wondering what people think on this, couple of years ago when I was looking for an M20b25 for my first swap, there were loads about on eBay. Looking about now, just for research purposes, there seem to be hardly any at all, only parts of. Is there a shortage of these great engines in the mainstream market? Maybe I should hang on to my spare one? Thanks Joe

you cant even get a mk5 ford escort for that price anymore.

hang on to the car you've got as it might just go up in value as a few more make their way to china.

I'm sure many were thrown away with 24v conversions.

Nope, not just you. M20s are getting thinner on the ground now as the E30 is vanishing from the scrapyards.

The good thing is E36, E46 and Z3s are becoming more common yard fodder which means plentiful 24v engines which however you slice it (and I am a big fan of the M20) are better. Vastly so. In standard form they are more powerful by about 10% and give better economy by about 30%.
They have much more potential for upgrading as well, they are much less strangled in the head design.

The best bit of the 24v engines is any good insurance company are not too concerned if your using a 12v or 24v engine, they are only interested in the peak output.

At the moment I have a 200hp limit on the E30 policy and as long as I stay below that then I would only have to let them know I had stuck a 24v in, no cost.

We have reached a point where converting to an M20B25 makes no financial sense and is only something worth doing for originality reasons. (in which case a conversion is the wrong thing anyway).

TL:DR - they are becoming less available, however it's not a big deal.
