It definitely isn't Motronic 1.7.
The number you want is here: http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/inde ... st_of_ECUs

It will be Motronic 1.3 and should have a 174 ECU.
1.7 was used in the same engine fitted in the E36, but the E30 316i touring still used 1.3, even through it wasn't introduced until after the E36 was using 1.7.

387 is indeed for a M40 1.8.
A 172 ECU for a M20B20 is the same as a 173 ECU for a M20B25, apart from the plug in 'chip'.
If the 'chip' from a 173, or an aftermarket 'chip' for a 2.5 engine is plugged into a 172 ECU, then it will be suitable for a M20B25.
I have no idea if this principle can be applied to M40B16 and M40B18 ECUs as well, but you say that there has been a software change to your ECU, so I wonder if it has been reprogrammed for a 1.6?
