Don't know if this has been posted on before but how much hassle is it from a technology & cost point of view to have a chatroom?

One of the Lexus forums I go on has a chat room. Only trouble is there's hardly ever any bugger on the forum at the same time, so occasionally you may get about 4 people in the chat room, but it works well. www.lexusclub.co.uk It is not a very active forum, unlike this place where there's seldom less than 100 users online except the small hours of the morning.

I think it would work very well and would perhaps avoid threads being hijacked. Example last night, pacerpete mentioned about his brush with the law in the Ace Meet thread and I, guilty as the others managed to almost fill a page talking about this and other subjects.

Anyway, food for thought :D

Chat rooms are live, a bit like msn if you have ever used that, much quicker response time(well instant actually).

This is a good idea but it is a question to put to an Admin to be honest. I undoubtly believe this has been thought of before but don't know how far it would have got.

Best speak to E30Adam :)

thanks for your comments, I was really thinking aloud with this one. yes it is undoubtedly an issue for the mods/ Adam/ site hosts etc. I was just curious as to whether it had ever been mentioned in the past and if so, what the reason was for not proceeding, as like many of you have agreed, having a chat room where there is instant scrolling chat would perhaps take some of the clutter out of some posts.

Any mods got any opinions here? Obviously chatrooms need to be policed.

if its done it cant be controlled, we are all adults here but there are a few kids some of what will get said shown mentioned will not only upset users, but the mods and the hosts.

A chat room would be an ace idea. A mini forum that I am on has one. www.minifinity.com its really good if you ask me.

Thanks for the idea E30BeemerLad!

To a certain extent a chatroom would be cool-means you could talk about non e30 stuff whilst still being on the site. However, given the current issues we're having with the hosting of the zone, I fear that adding more features could cause more problems...

And, as previously expressed, the moderating of the chatroom would probably be an 24hr a day thing, not to mention the possibility that it could be possibly accessed by folks not meant to see it (eg kids). Therefore, in my opinion, it has more cons than pro's...

certainly I'll put it to the other mods and see what they think :D

cheers

This point was raised a while back and it was discussed and voted against the idea for the following reasons:

People would ask questions on the chat room to try and get an instant answer to a question. Whilst this is a good thing, it doesn't help us build up a database of questions and answers that can be searched through.

Some people will remember the days when we didn't have a search facility and each forum section would only hold about 1,000 posts at any one time and anything older would automatically get deleted.

What we have now is a fantastic archive and goldmine of information for people to research and use at their will. I feel that a chatroom would totally kill the forum.

We have the Pub Talk section for mindless chatter and as long as it's kept clean and abides by forum rules then we have no problems with you talking idle chatter in there.

all though i would love a chatroom, i must agree with all of adam's above points, most of all the final one (quoted), in that the pub talk is more than adedquate in that unless something offensive is posted then its left open regardless of the subject matter and therefore regarding the chat room almost usless before it even begins

just my 2p worth
