HI , 1987 316 Baur 4 speed auto.
I never took much notice of when it changed up as in speed ( on a flat surface) until now when I noticed that I was in 4th @ 35mph.
Then at @ 58 mph it locked into what I would call "overdrive".
Is this normal ?

that's normal... the torque converter gets locked at +/- 80 km/hour to provide a solid connection between crank and prop.
