I've been using it for a few years now in my daily hacks. I do an oil and filter change every 6000 miles and the cars are as good as gold
For the price it is you can't go wrong
Rumour has it it's made by Comma which is part of Exon Mobile. Either way it's made by a reputable manufacture and branded as halfords and meets BMW specs

You do. Sometimes though you pay more than you have to merely for a Castrol/Mobil etc label on the can. Halfords oil is blended by Comma and there's nothing wrong with their oils. I've used it for 10-15 years and it meets BMW specs.zd3bx wrote:Halfords oil?

M20 will be fine on 5w or 10w 40
BMW will say an s14 should be run on 10w60 castrol however some people have run them on 5w40 10w40 10w50
The first number is the winter viscosity. It's a guid to how it flows as at given temp low temp (I can't recall what it is) So in the UK's climate a 5w is the lowest you'll require. It doesn't get cold enough to justify going for a 0w. However the engines characteristics do also come into play
The second number is the flow rate at 100 degrees C. A 40 will not be as thin as a 30 at this temperature.
As a rule for it is best to stick to the manufacturers recommendation at the operating temp viscosity. But with say an s14, if you are not driving it hard a 10w50 will be fine. If anything a 5w40 should also be OK (lots of people have reported no issues with using a 5w40) but they have not taken their engine apart or done anything scientific to back this up
A final point, I always use fully synthetic stuff these days. Oil technology has moved on and it will out perform any semi or mineral base oil.

I use good old 10w-40 in my 318. I have an account with my local TPS (VAG) and use their quantum semi synth which is usually £12-15 for 5 litres.
