Hey everyone,
When I bought my e30 el hood wasn't working and all motors were disconnected so that it could be folded manually. When I do so the U shape/horseshoe panel doen't lock in, if i apply little pressure by hand it does close and is flush with rest of body work. So question is:
If I were to get hardtop would I be able to put it on or would horseshoe panel cause problems? The way I am thinking is that the weight of the hardtop would be enough to make it stay closed, and pins lock in the hardtop? I never owned one...

The motor that is in the middle (when viewed from the boot) raises and closes the horseshoe. It's final movement locks the horseshoe in place. If the motors have been disconnected, then it is only the weight of the horseshoe keeping it closed going over a bump or a lumpy surface will always cause it to rattle.
You can convert to a manual version - there are sellers here that can supply all the necessary parts, but have you considered trying to get the roof to work properly.
I have not owned a hard top, but I think it will sit over the section you're having problems with and hold it in place. They weigh a lot!
