So, back from holiday and jump into the E30, only to be greeted by a horrible musty smell.

A quick look at the carpets revealed half an inch of water in both passenger footwells - bad times :(

I stripped the carpet back, chucked a load of talc around and got busy with the hose pipe. The frilly brown bits were a give away before I started with the hose to be honest.

Going to get the glovebox out tomorrow after work and will get some more pics for all you rust perverts.

Wish me luck!

This goes one of two ways:

1) Epic resto, with gape and grafted in metal, heroic pats on the back in forum format of "well done chap", "Nice to see another saved", "you are my hero" etc... Your wallet is quickly emptied and your credit card takes a beating, you have no spare time left in your life, what you do have you scour the web looking for parts and updating your thread for more egotistical back slapping hoping it might one day get you the acclaim of a zone gold upgrade to a worthless turd that you love and adore regardless... your wife leaves you and takes the kids, but you don't care because all you have to do is get the E30 welded up and through an MOT so you can proudly drive it again on the road stating to everyone "who needs a new Kia on HP, when you can keep these on the road easy enough"

2) China

:)
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Surely a bit a silicon sealant and some duct tape and she'll be fine

In all seriousness, I'm under no illusion Ferg.

If it's bad, I'll frag it and keep all the good bits in my lock up, and start the search for another touring.

Ok - got the glovebox out and it looks bad:

Image

The engine is due to come out next Thursday so that my boat anchor can finally go in. With this in mind, is this easier to repair with the engine out (I appreciate it won't be a quick job), or should I cut my losses, frag it and send the remains to China to become a toaster?

Your (sensible) input would be appreciated :)

Hmm, doesn't look too clever.

Realistically though how many e30s are not rotten here now? I bet a lot have that lurking behind the glove box and the ones that don't have issues elsewhere.

Frustratingly, with the exception of some bubbling at the bottom of the driver's door, the rest of the car is ok.

The other usual places like jacking points and scuttles are solid. I know as I've literally just gone over the whole car with the screwdriver 'poke' test this morning.

It just goes to show that a lot of people drive round oblivious and don't spend time checking such areas and never look or have a real rust hunt and checking fixing or preventing such issues, "rust free" is said with such ease when describing their e30, with rust like this often lurking somewhere having never been checked

To the op - if your removing engine, remove all the bulkhead heat proofing and remove the dash and insulation, and have a real look at it and the whole bulkhead area

From a quick look earlier today, it seems ok Chris.

I guess until the engines out and I can get the dash off, I won't know for sure.

Thanks everyone for the input. If I can fix it without too much drama I will.

This water got into the car when it was parked up, so is nothing to do with water thrown up from the road and coming through the holes.
The source of this water is through the grills on the scuttle. The sealant at the bottom of the scuttle box has failed and water is getting between the two skins of the bulkhead and rusting it out from the inside. The inner skin is thinner metal and rusts through first, but you can be certain that the engine side isn't far behind, even if the rust hasn't made it to the outer surface yet.
This is serious degradation of a major structural member of the car, and isn't good news at all!

Brian, do you think an effective / safe repair can be made in this area?

I don't want to waste my time and do something that isn't safe either.

Thanks

This is a difficult but not totally tragic repair. As your engine will be removed, the presence of the wiring loom will be the biggest pain.

At this stage, the dash and under dash sound deadening needs to be removed to see exactly the extent of the dramas.
This is an increasingly common issue with E30s. If the rest of the car has passed a THOROUGH screwdriver test, it is not a tragic enough issue that warrants scrapping the turd, unless it is a quattroporte.

PS We need lots of pics of all of the woes you uncover ! :)

Think it depends how bad, I have seen DanThe do a small weld repair on capri robs touring but in all honesty to get the full extent I would say dashboard, engine and insulation both sides of the firewall to really know what you are up against
