I've been offered a 1996 e39 528i auto for £100.
Thinking it might be worthwhile if I can drop it in my 1991 cabby.
Does anyone have any idea if this will work,what other bits I might need,costs etc.

The engine in the E39 is an M52 engine. It's a common swap for E30s, although most people use E34 or E36 donors. Here's the How To guide:
