Afternoon all,
Having purchased another E30, more for fun than anything, I have discovered that there is a bit of a swimming pool in the recess to the right hand side in the boot.
I lifted up the lining and there is a small swimming pool under there. But it is limited to the right hand side of the car.
There is no rot to be found anywhere, it is a dry stored car with only 68k miles.
Where could the water be getting in?
Much appreciated!
Water in boot (driver side, right hand drive model)

I have water in the same spot.. Changed boot and light seals, then realised it was coming from the sealant to the side of the bumper. Leaking boot is a common problem.
Newspaper or talc in the corner and spray a pressure washer when it's closed.

i have three e30's and they all had water in the boot syndrome. this it was an optional extra. 340-BMW Swimming pool. adding a drain hole at the bottom means the water doesnt build up and can run out, even if there is some gets in during heavy rain. suspect blocked drainage is part of the problem with the build up at least. i left drain holes the bottom took no other remedial action and havent had any damp problems since.
Not sure if this is universal or just a botch by a PO, but mine has a black paint/sealant brushed along the inside of the side of the boot, around the otherside of the bumper, and i have water coming in there.Phil-E30 wrote:Cheers for those suggestions lads. I will get out today and have a look.
Mitchen, when you say sealant to the side of the body, do you mean the black trim around the body not being attached properly? Or am I misunderstanding?
Mate , I Had a Leak for almost a year and i was desperate finding it .
Check out the Seal and everything like door seals ,
also , remove your battery , and check out the panel beneath it .
Rust could've destroyed the metal sheats under the battery , ( OFC if you have a battery under the bonnet not in boot ) .
also , Remove the Rear Right Wheel , and then Lok under the arch , you'll see a plastic cover that covers the fuel line to the tank ,
It has 2 screws , remove it , and in that area you'll see rust has taken the metal.
repair it and no more leaks .
The Water get in the boot , then through the Battery cable opening on the rear shelf , to the right side of the car to the front foot well .

Cheers for the continued help on this lads, thought I might give an update and see if it indicates one issue or another.
The water was worst after a long drive home in the rain, it is now sitting in the drive and has been for a couple of days. Despite heavy, sustained rain at times no more water has found its way in to the boot
So it seems only to happen when I am driving. Does that make any other cause more likely than the next?

All trim out of the boot, sprinkle talcum powder around, and leave/drive in the rain. Streaks in the powder will show you exactly the route the water takes.
With everything as it should be, E30 rear wells remain totally dry, without the addition of extra drain holes!
(Note that there is a drain in each well as standard, formed where two sheets of metal join near the front, but this is (presumably) to let paint drain at the factory, and are blocked with seam sealer.)

This is a very common source of leaks which often fails to get mentioned in threads like these. The grommets are single use and need replacing if ever the trim is removed, and fail anyway over time.TheDutch wrote:Mine was due to some split lugs where the 'hockey stick' trim attached around the rear side window, might be worth checking.
Make with the talcum powder first and determine exactly where the problem lies before checking random things and possibly causing leaks that weren't there before.
