So. Where do I get one of these illusive critters? Has anyone ever tried to use something else? The OEM ones are pretty expensive. I need a seal!

First question is why do you think you need one? If it's because water is getting into the cabin, then you are going to be disappointed with the results of your prospective purchase.
The seal is primarily a wind seal to eliminate noise. It slows down the entry of water, but is not designed to be at all waterproof. Water that gets past it is collected by a fixed gutter on three sides, and a sliding one at the rear, and then disposed of by four drain tubes to the bottom of the car - one at each corner of the sunroof tray.
If water is getting into the cabin, then the word 'rust' will feature in the cause.
