Mileage

What is the car's mileage supposed to be 'locked' to, engine or shell?

The reason I ask is my E30 had an engine swap a couple years ago (engine died, had it swapped for the same model). The new engine had 70kish on. I knew all of this when I bought it.

Then the other day I read something about how the clocks are never supposed to change, I'm not sure how true this is when replacing parts.

Recently I've been going my cars history with a fine comb. I noticed something really strange about the mileage back in 2008.

2007 - 144k
2008 - 13k
2009 - 73k
2010 - 78k

The engine swap done sometime in 2008 and SORN'd later on that year.

I've checked the MOT test numbers online and everything matches up with the certificates I have. There are no weird jumps in mileage except from the above.

So, legally what is supposed to happen to clocks after an engine change, and what (if anything) should I do about the odd 13k in 08?

Mileage goes with identification of the car and the only ID that is "fixed" to the car is the VIN number.

That makes sense, thanks. Will I ever run into any legal issues considering what's happened and if I ever do come to get the car valued in a couple years down the road will this effect it drastically?

I don't understand how this happens in the first place, obviously you can go to a moody garage and get them to fudge bits off but then the documents get sent off to the DVLA they?

Anyway, this should probably bother me more than it does, but I don't plan on ever selling the car.

Was 13k, but yeah I figured it could have been a typo, but then surprised the DVLA or someone else didn't pick up on it.

Even so, why would it go from 144k to 13Xk, that's a lot of pretty big typo's

The only think that would be illegal about that as far as I am aware would be to try to sell the car as a 13K mile car.

Provided you are clear about the history and that the clocks do not reflect the true mileage then I would not worry about it.

Plenty of the classic bikes end up with brand new 0mile odometers when they are restored, the old ones are often goosed.

Right, thanks for clearing that up, I don't ever plan on selling it.
