I've run a search but couldn't find a topic regarding this.

In the process of changing my discs and pads today the rears have thrown up another issue. The handbrake shoes also need changing which isn't an issue but the spring retaining pin no longer locks behind the dust cover as the hole is rusted out and is now too large.

How the hand brake was working before is a mystery as the pin had fallen out and lodged itself inside the spring holding the shoes together.

I've failed to find anyone selling the dust shields and have read else where that replacing them is pretty serious as you need to take out the wheel baring etc to get the old off and the new on.

Anyone have any advice or work around as to how I can avoid doing major work?

On the plus side I adjusted my tappets and and super pleased with the sound she is now making without any ticking at all.

New dust shields are available to order from your local friendly BMW dealer.

Yes,the correct way to fit involves removing the drive flange, which will probably bring the inner bearing race with it.

However,there are two alternates.
1 Slice the new backplate and bolt it in,then weld up the cut, avoiding leaving a lump of weld on any part that the handbrake shoes rub on.
2 If your original backplate is otherwise sound, you can obtain a repair part from your local motor factor to use to retain the pin,it's got a slot in it that the pin's fitting enters. These come in 'brake shoe fitting kits'.

Some years ago,I was stuck on a Sunday afternoon with this problem, and I was able to adapt a 'penny' washer to fit behind the backplate and secure the shoe pin that way...the bodge lasted at least four years,I re-discovered it a few weeks ago when I had to replace the wheel bearing to satisfy the MoT man!

Or if you don't want to do that, get a couple of lockheed washers:
