Another wheel/tyre gripe
Moderator: martauto
Having finally got a set of 9" Borbet A's with rubber I wish I hadnt bothered. Touring now handles like a slag on a frozen lake. Tyres are 195/45/16 . Looks fine by me, tho' I'm sure someone will disagree. Biggest problem, having had them checked for true and balanced with the correct spiggot rings is that it still handles like a girraffe on steroids and worst still gives humungous steering wheel wobble at 60. Help would be appreciated.
A 195 45 on a 9in is going to have pretty distorted sidewalls, and no doubt the offset is miles away from standard which affects the scrub radius.
What tyres are they? Some budget brands vibrate even if the tyres balance up perfectly. Worn bushes can also lead to vibrations at certain speeds.

Yeah, ok, perhaps I've let my head run away with things, but ,Borbet a's were always my big want and 9" too boot. So please help this daft old c*nt. I've tried to keep up with trends and like the 'Euro look', however, its obviously not for me. I currently have stock rear springs with a 60mm drop on the front (mainly cos I was dragging the arse out of my pipes with a 40mm drop on the back). I realise that some dont like the 'dragster' look, however, that doesnt bother me, nor does the balloon effect. So any help with tyre size really would be appreciated.
Firstly, I'm pretty sure Borbets are made of lead, so they weigh a ton and they're probably wonky, thus making it handle badly.
Secondly, you should have got a staggered set of wheels. 9" wide wheels on the front of any car not designed for them will make it handle badly. You'd have been much better of with the 7.5's on the front.
Thirdly, that's a fair amount of stretch on your tyres which is only detrimental to handling.
Do you get the general idea of where I'm going here?

I think the word you're looking for is w*nker!
Point taken. Keep an eye on the for sale ads then.
Thanks for your comment.
Anything smaller than a 225 width will start to be distorted on a 9in wheel, and I doubt you'd get a 225 on a 9 under the front arches of an e30.
A 7.5 on the front would let you run more sensible offsets and a 205 tyre without upsetting the steering too much, and a mild stretch on a 9in rear shouldn't make it feel too odd.
