Having a small problem with the coilovers im wanting to buy.
The make is JOM (yes i know cheap, but its a 316 and i dont really want to spend 1k> on suspension at the moment)
Anyway, im trying to pick the correct set.
I have a 2 door '89 316i and there doesnt seem to be any option for a coupe coilover set. Is the cabriolet suspension set up the same as a coupe?
The options are Cabriolet, saloon or estate. Which one do i go for?
Heres the website http://www.jomcoilovers.co.uk/jom-shop.php?js=on

a) Is it a 316 or a 316i? Big difference
b) I highly doubt you have a Coupe - there were only 4 ever made. You have a 2 door Saloon, so any products marked as for "saloon" will fit your car.
c) No, cab springs won't work because the car is significantly heavier.
d) There's no E30 "estate" either. It's called a Touring, and actually has a smaller useable boot floor than a saloon. And no, touring springs won't work for you either.
e) Why do you want coilovers? Are you taking the car on a racetrack and need to individually configure each spring? If not, just get a decent set of springs and shocks; much better suspension for much less money.
f) I'm not even going to click on the JOM website. You might as well replace your suspension with marshmallows if you're thinking of fitting JOM coiloverzz.
g) In summary, stop dicking around on Volkswagen dubscum websites, take the time to learn what suspension is actually for, and then reassess whether you want to fit coilovers to a BMW.

Fair enough. I just wanted to choose my ride height without buying different sets of springs, in turn wasting money.SHAKEELE30 wrote:id take the advice given above... talking from experience...

Well look at pictures of various e30's and decide on a height. Although you are looking at coilovers so I'll save you the bother, just go order some -80mm bad boyz and be done

Buy a set of Eibach springs, a Pro Kit that drops the car 35mm. It won't impress 14 year old lads or the stance idiots but it will ride well and look good. £140 ish, the same price as JOM rubbish.

tbh its a 316... depending on your age you might want to get some coilovers and go low.. ive had the original spings/shocks with the 4x4 ride height where you could waft over bumps and rag it around,
then dropped it to 40mm all round, eibach front springs, ta technix shocks all round and rear springs, which was a major improvement but had a reverse stance to it.. handling improved dramatically that was with a 4 pot, changed over everything and went in for a h&r cupkit with strut brace, h&r bars m3 offset lollipops, basically the lot and handling was very very good, however the kit was second hand,
next few months im looking into the gaz coilover setup, end of the day you live you learn! if you dont like something preferably if your doing it yourself? you can easily change it over...
i had an exhaust system which sounded like a wet fart and was similar to a honda cannon... bought it new but was utter shite, took it off returned it and got a scorpion system!
just ask around for advice or specific set ups, and see which one tickles your fancy and get it and make your own mind up, JOMs are cheap coilies with the only advantage is that you can ride low,
i drive the shit out of my one, so would like something with stiff handling, and plan on taking it on a long road trip in the future so coilies are the best option for me with adjustable height, plus on a summers day here, i like to keep it low,
60/40 ride heights about right same as the cup kit atm!

ive used the gaz setup, and i found them to be horrible, hence why i stopped driving my car, and got rid of them...
i then bought the b12 kit which includes bilstein shocks and eibach springs, so much better drive...
i also wanted the height option as and when i wanted but truth be told you wont be adjusting as much as you may think, so im against them, most would recommend the b12 kit or the h&r kit, along with some decent arb's...

Right now this is just a small project car. Its not for racing or anything i just want it to look nice and ride well, with as minimal amount of bother. Think ill probably go for GMAX lowering springs and shocks. 40mm drop at front and 35mm at the back, hopefully thats enough!bmw9818 wrote:tbh its a 316... depending on your age you might want to get some coilovers and go low.. ive had the original spings/shocks with the 4x4 ride height where you could waft over bumps and rag it around,

i was actually thinking of placing an order this month so if its not great il check out others, i like a bit of comfort now and then, in terms of handling, cornering at speed etc? how was it...
had eibachs/ ta technix/Apex/ and on a cup kit atm... is it in the same league?
