Hi all,

New here, looking into getting either a tech 1 or 2, ideally a niceish one. What sort of money do they go for?
Seems prices fluctuate quite a lot

Cheers

All I say is
Get a pre purchase inspection before you buy
Buy the best you can afford
Top ones best of the best you are looking at £10k tops

Most Sports cannot command that kind of price
Due to
Rust
High miles
High owners
Accidents
Missing or not up to date service history
Bodges
Bruv spec
Etc

Good,rust-free tech 1's are very thin on the ground, now.

Tech 2's are past masters at hiding rust behind that bodykit.

Carefully study the zone wiki buying advice section, name your location and ask if any local zoner can hold your hand whilst looking at potential purchases.
Youth is wasted on the young.

OP mentions 325 and tech. 1/2. Plenty of 325s left the dealers with tech. kits without being 'Sports'.

Indeed they did. Only sang is, M technic kits that were dealer/retro fitted 20+ years ago tend to have been fitted, shall we say with not much care and tend to be worse for rot that factory fit Kitted cars.

The factory fit cars tend to hide the rot where as dealer/retro fit cars tended to cause the rot.

Nearly every one ive seen dealer/retro fitted has been a scabby old pig, quite often being broken for spares.

That's because all car dealers are cowboys.

You should know, Barry! :)

We should start a rating review service of all the BMW dealers so I know which ones to avoid and which ones to go to

Avoid all of them. Although the parts department at Vines in Redhill is OK.

That's fair enough and glad you have had a good experience with a BMW dealer but having dealt with them on a day to day business, on the whole they are not much cop.

Also, on your remarks about avoiding all dealer is poor as dealers are only as good as their staff. Some do have useless w ankers but many do not.

I'd like to think I'm not to shabby on the spanners, but if someone who really knows there onions that was relatively local to come and see a potential buy that would be sweet (beer tokens of course)

Will get hunting:)

The hourly rates are way more than you need to pay. And most of them these days don't know how to work on a car if they can't plug their laptop in.

I know you are an exception, Barry, but I bet even you get pressure to work fast not clever.

Find a good independent or, better still, do the work yourself.

Dealers have to pay for all the glitzy salesrooms and free coffee.

The hourly rates vary depending on how old your car is.

Agreed, some London dealer rates are frightening but Chandlers Hailsham were not that long ago £50 PH plus vat for cars over 10 years old. Thats cheaper than a lot of independents.

Every dealer i have worked for have had their fair share of techs that have been with BMW a long time and know what their doing.

And yes, all techs are under pressure to produce hours, thankfully i dont have to worry about that any more. :)
