as it says in the title im looking on getting another e30 for work and back but wanted to know how good are the 316 and 318 to run reliability and mpg

You should be able to expect to achieve 30mpg average quite easily, and probably high 30s mpg if driven gently, though possibly as low as 25mpg or less if you drive in town alot.

Reliability all boils down to how well the car's been maintained, and how hard you drive it.

My 316 automatic ranged between 22-26mpg around, i struggled to get near 30mpg. That was with a well maintained and serviced engine, tried different petrol stations, filling tyres to correct amount.

If you have any worries about mpg, an E30 is not for you :D

When I was commuting I'd average about 40mpg, I would've thought that's good enough for most people. All depends on the nature of the journey though.

I ran a 316i touring for several years,overall,it averaged about 34mpg.Best ever was a return trip to Bath using mostly motorway whern it returned a whisker over 38mpg.
However,it's worst was when 'er indoors used it for her home/work commute with no other usage,single trip of .9 of a mile....returned 18.7mpg... :mad:

i used to use my old 318is for my daily of A roads and traffic..

i would use £60 quid easily in roughly 5days = approx 300miles :mad:

hence why i have a diesel as my daily now and my E30 for the weekends/ evenings..

unless you live close to your work i wouldn't recommend an E30!

I currently use my 320 touring as a daily- average of 450 miles a week, 64 mile commute each day, 55-65mph or dead slow/stop depending on traffic.

Anyone who is local can tell you that the a/M 8 is a horrible road to drive at rush hour- So I'm fairly happy with the way my car gets on TBH

I get between 32-35mpg depending on the conditions of the commute. Not too shabby for the "thirstiest" engine the e30 came with.

With a 318i (only 15bhp down on my 320) I'd reckon I'd be seeing 34-37mpg on the commute

I have a 3.73 on the rear, which helps keep the motorway RPM down

I currently daily a 318i auto. Commute to work which is roughly 20 miles a day; with a little bit of traffic experienced to and from work.

I get around 30-32mpg. If I had a manual box I reckon I could push the old girl to get around 40mpg.

It's all about how you drive.

Make sure the car is well serviced and make sure there aren't any holes in the exhaust! When I first bought the car a year ago, the exhaust was rusted where the bracket straps around it. I was getting around 18mpg driving like a grandad.
Changed the exhaust and got a few other essential maintenance issues attended to and I nearly doubled my MPG.

I wish I had read this before, lol. I just bought a 320i M20B20.

I used to own a 316i, and managed to go as low as 7.5litres per 100 kms (sorry, we count this way in Belgium) which is not so bad in fact. With a heavy right foot it would go up to 13 or 15l/100 if you were really pressing on.

It had a K&N cone filter on it, all the rest was stock. It helped giving noticeably more middle range torque starting at around 2k rpm, and made a very nice throaty sound.

I will do my best to try and achieve the best fuel usage I can with my new car and will post again. lol. I won't last long, I know but that's why we buy 'em isn't it? The sound of that straight six is just... well, sixual!

Regarding reliablity, well if it has been properly taken care of, it should be practically trouble free. The thing is you need to service it regulary and it is a car that needs attention to keep it running in a proper manner. You'll love working on it in the event of an intervention because it has been properly designed.

Now to debate over 316 or 318, this is out of my league, I have only owned the first so couldn't compare.

Either way, you'll enjoy it!

I concur. My sweet dear lady has such a heavy foot for such a small woman. Drives my 325 daily and never returns it with fuel in it.

I did a trip around Cornwall the summer just passed and averaged around 30ish mpg.

a whole 5 days of driving the sport and here and there back from work done around average of 21mpg not to bad lol as my daily was at the garage but i would hate to run it daily lol

well i just drove from totton to bristol airport then from bristol to gatwick then to fleet on my way back still hav quater of a tank had hit 275.4 and still looking fo about another 60 miles left so good

That sounds about right to me.. normally get 350ish miles to a tank when mainly motorway/A/B road drives..

IF i brim the tank I get 200 motorway miles to 1/2 tank. Never get 200miles out the other half though!!!
