Depends on the quality and quantity of the amount of work that needs doing, but it sounds fair for a full respray.

The guy who is doing the welding works at a BMW workshop and the quality of the respray will be good. The price includes the rotten rear arches to be done, front jacking points and the scuttle rust.

Seen his work before my dads known him since the 80's lol. And the welder works as a Panel beater/Welder at BMW for 8 years, so I'm assuming if he was sh1t they would of sacked him a long time ago LOL!

Where's he doing it and what equipment is he using ? He may work at bmw (everyone's sprayer/mechanic on here seems to work or have worked there lol) but how many re sprays do you think a local BMW stealer does? Not often at all/hardly ever I bet, more just crash repairs and small jobs and panels and bits and pieces, but if he's doing it at home in a garage/make shift booth and not a proper oven baked re spray with the very best compressor and guns etc, then they are factors on quality, I know some very good crash repair guys who work for big company's for a long long time, but when it comes to doing a full re spray at a home environment, its a different ball game and the quality is ok but not near that of a full time high quality professional that does a lot of full re sprays and major work and has a proper booth and oven etc and a perfect set up to produce top quality results

Seems too cheap to me, but depends on what is being done. At the end of the day the expense comes from the man hours involved in the preparation of the panels, not the actual time taken to spray the car or the products used.

It is all good and well fixing the rear arches but you may as well do a proper job and check for rust on all the other panels, you will be surprised what you may find...

I would spend a bit more and get a proper bare metal prep job done and then you will know that it will last another 20 odd years...

I've been quoted £1800 plus materials which will be in glasurit for a full sport to be painted. And that's not including strip and reassembly. That'll have to be done by me. So for £1500, it's either a bargain or may be sub standard.

Sounds a feasible price if its someone you know. I'd have thought £1500 would cover materials with no mark up and time at £25 per hour

The guy who is doing the welding his work is of a good standard and the other guy who's is respraying the car has his own oven baked spray booth. This price also includes paint and materials. Most of the stripping will be done by me and my dad to keep costs down.

From your responses it sounds a bit of a pointless initial post. You have stated your Dad knows the chap and you know of the others work etc so......

stew - £25 per hour is a cheap rate for a bodyshop! More like 40-50..
As always, prices are area dependent on area though

Colour match paint is going to be around 150 per litre.

You are stripping it down so depending on how much detail the full respray includes, this will save some money. (are they doing inside the door shuts etc etc. Are they just going to give the whole bod a quick sand and then paint or will the do it properly)
You say they are doing the welding work. Is this just for what they can see? As once they start taking away the paint there is bound to be more work to do.

Not trying to rain on your parade, nice1 for ya if you can get a proper job for that price. Just speaking as someone who does a little airbrushing for a living so knows a small amount of bodyshop pricing/workings and also as someone who has recently been quoted for some minor bodyshop work.

If you are doing the prep work then I guess 1500 is a good price...

That price is mates rates at there very best I would have thought.

It makes no difference if he's an accident repair man or not. If he can tackle a local repair matching and hiding to existing paint? He can paint a whole car thats stripped with few edge lines to worry about.

Its the conditions in which he's painting that matters. If he has a booth, works for BMW and is known? At £1500 quid, you should be tearing his arm off.

But as above, if the rear arches need replacement, what else is he going to find??? And what are the timescales? If he's doing it in his spare time, don't expect it to happen in a few weeks.

That would be cheap. Just had mine done £2800 and I did prep work.
As the guys have said once you go looking, you find more that needs doing and you will need to do it while cars stripped. Took five months to do mine as in no rush for car. Done evenings and when work was slack. This doesn't include parts. It all soon mounts up! By Christ it mounts up!! Used original parts where available but a number of part NLA as BMW told me. Looking over a year before that scouring parts keeping costs down.
Also mentioned the condition in which he was painting is a large factor. My car done in booth. Only one in area, luckily his work ok.
Lost heart half way through especially when I kept finding more work.
I got it back yesterday now missed this summer and scared to take it out considering the man hours gone in to it.
Good luck with yours.

My neighbours is getting his e30 sprayed for 1k, all the welding done (nearly completed) for £300.

The guy's working on his car are friends from back home in Barbados, known each other for past 40years. Always helping each other out, doing favours etc etc..

Mates rates do exsist!

A cheap paint job doesn't always mean it's gonna be a BS job, if this guy earns his bread n' butter working for BMW maybe he feels he doesn't need to charge full whack for his mate's son car!
