have talked to the insurance company and been told i'll be offered the book price for the car, and thats the thing, i dont know what that is..
its a 1991 318is with a genuine 71k miles on the clock, interiors immaculate and the exterior is pretty much spotless too (has couple of very minor rust spots, no rust creeping under the arches etc. unfortunatly now it has a big axe wound in the side and the chasis bent..can anyone help give me a valuation as i expect im gonna have to fight the insurers a little..

cheers

cheers for that, have a bad feeling im gonna get offered Ԛ£500 quid or something.
not sure the difference between an 318i and a 318is is that well known, didnt seem to be when i called the insurance company anyway, but the more backup for a figure in that region the greater confidence i'd have in pushing them a bit harder.
am now driving a corsa courtesy car, dignitys taking a battering got to recoup as much as poss asap, would love another 318is but donno where im gonna find one in that condition again. :(

anyone else wanna put their tuppence in with a value?

You'll probably get offered about a grand. DON'T ACCEPT IT. You will have to send them cutouts from magazines or adverts printed off from websites showing that iS are worth more than that.

Get a few expensive car adverts and send them off and they should offer you a larger sum. I used to work for an insurance company and they will always pay more than their initial offer.

I agree with the above, got to be worth Ԛ£1500+.

Like Adam said, probably best getting a few adverts together of good priced ones to prove it`s replacement value!

Best of luck :)

Try and get the car back too, at least then you can make some more money back in parts, got to be a bit of money's worth there.

I got a feeling they will offer you about Ԛ£500-Ԛ£800....book price on these is sweet FA. same with all E30's

Like the other guys said, you'll have to fight to get what it is ACTUALLY worth

Good Luck

Thats bang on, I had the same issue when I wrote my Golf G60 Rallye off and they tried to offer my GTi money so you just send them adverts with a few iS for sale......and as Simon says try and get the car back you may be able to split it or rebuild it

Make sure you emphasis it's a 318iS not a 318i, the glass's guide for old cars has quite a good value for the 318iS....

I'd want to push the insurers for Ԛ£1800+

The insurance company might want to see how much you paid for it though...

Dream on!!! it will never happen. despite the car is worth that in market value, true to the motto "lifes a bitch" you wil never EVER get what you could sell for especially a 15 year old motor. i know it angers people im one of the ones who had to accept 650 for an IS but there is no way you can over come it even if you send adverts etc etc your only ever guna get a set amount

Good Luck
slightly pessimistic. consdiering i should get 650 for mine an that was 130000 miles all options etc, i think 900-1000 on this i would be happy. but like others have said, try and retain the car mate, i retained mine an sold enough of it to buy a new car and live for a bit!

the book price for my old touring was only Ԛ£400 in fair condition, ended up getting Ԛ£800 and allowed to remove all my bits that i wanted to keep(alloys etc) which wasnt bad considering i paid Ԛ£500 for it :D

thanks for all the info guys, cool :thumb: , ive got my fingers x'd at the mo re. the insurers, called the garage my car was towed to, and got confirmation that the cars gone for good, uneconomical repair :(. knew that anyway but there was a faint irrational glimmer of hope that they might think it worth fixing seeing as its a damn classic ( well it was in my mind anyway) but no such joy. ah well.
asked them what they thought about retaining the car seemed to think there wouldnt be any issues so depending on how that goes i may have some nice v low mileage 'is' bits and sods available soon,
you can pm me if might want anything (presumming i get the car back)

cheers

thought i'd just post a quick update and my thanks to the guys who advised looking out adverts on autotrader to back a claim for more cash from the insurers, finally accepted Ԛ£1225. from looking around think that Ԛ£1500 maybe a tad more would have been the true value, but need another car asap and its dragging out a bit now..wasnt ultimately able to retain the car either, the way it was explained to me was theres four catagories of insurance write off ...A,B,C,D... A+B are repairs that are uneconomical and C+D are reserved for cars that would be unsafe if ever put back on the road, may have got the AB CD the wrong way around but whatever, my cars chasis humped. :(

have got a few bits from the car though
fogs
4x 14 inch bbs centre caps
spare 14inch bbs alloy
service reset tool
unused cans of bmw silver paint and laquer
2 electric wing mirrors (minor bubbling)
tools from tool kit
towing eye
'is' lip spoiler
'is' boot spoiler
bmw jack

will post the list in the for sale part of the forum..
looking for a new e30 soon as the cheque clears. :)
once again cheers guys although i never got 'top whack' for the car you helped guide me through the process. :thumb:
