E30 Sunroof Seal
Moderator: martauto
Hello guys, got a 89 316i 4 door with the manual sunroof and am looking to get a replacement gasket for the sunroof
I dont mind either the two piece or one piece but im having trouble trying to find one in this country and bellow $100
Could anyone point me in the right direction?
The car is being resprayed and rather stupidly I removed the old perished seal before looking into its replacement..
Thanks, Jamie

I'm about to buy a new roof seal for my E30, what is the difference between the one piece type and the two piece type??? My car seems to have two piece type , the car has had a very sketchy past and been rebuilt a few times
it's a 83 320i has the type of roof that doesn't have the pop up wind deflector in

Mines the pop up.. i would have thought they are all the same.. the only real difference between the two is that theres only one join? tbh i can only see it being a good thing i posted a topic on the cotswold bmw part of the forum and was quoted about 100 for the two piece seal and then 60 for the single so i will definitely order the single
you can have a go with this one

I got one today from Parklane BMW as I was on a tight shipping schedule ... I got the one piece type , the two piece type have slightly different profiles AKA front is slightly diff to rear, although they are the same from the topJamie8GTi wrote:Mines the pop up.. i would have thought they are all the same.. the only real difference between the two is that theres only one join? tbh i can only see it being a good thing i posted a topic on the cotswold bmw part of the forum and was quoted about 100 for the two piece seal and then 60 for the single so i will definitely order the single
The only thing i can think of between the two variants may be some sunroofs have a factory inbuilt pop up steel wind deflector mine dose not have this and cannot be fitted with one

?? If you have a (rain water) leak, it's NOTHING to do with the seal. It's not supposed to keep all water out.magpie wrote:if you have a leak seal and your roof still opens clean up the seal and the moss from the edges of your roof .

the sunroof panel seal does help keep out most of the water but not all of it, the sunroof cassette will catch the rest, that's how it's designed to work..
the one piece seal is shite and will NOT work correctly, they foul the operation of the tilt action because of the continuous rubber edge all the way around, this makes it stick during operation..
the proper 2 piece seal has a fibre edge on the rear section to aid movement and helps the sunroof panel to drop down correctly and sit flush in the closed position, sadly they are now costly to buy new...
most are serviceable as mick says, clean up the trailing edge they are always covered in Mossy type shite and grime, chances are it will still be up to the job...

That's what I was thinking....Jamie8GTi wrote:Ah, mine has the factory pop up wind deflector.. Maybe the difference in profile of the front of the two piece seal is to fit over it when down... Anyone know for sure?
The brand new seal from BMW has a fibre edge all the way round.... It's just a continuos rubber/ fibre edge profile
It looks the same as the rear of the 2piece type but will confirm that in a few days

well 6 months on with the brand new genuine BMW 1 piece seal
all i can say is theres no difference it works fine
and this talk about the continuous rubber edge ...well my 1 piece has the fibre its simply a length cut off a roll
it tilts perfect and dose everything normal
