Tried all the above and got quotes between £450-650!!!

Now I'm an old git (no claims or points in 50 years)! But live in E London, car on street, classic insurance? Forget it (only as a second car) there are no " deals" out there.

If you think that's bad, try being 17/18 again. Paying 10x that for the first year, for an awful car, is no fun :(

Work that out for todays prices.

Not really. I've never paid over £1k for insurance. :D

I've not had lightening quick cars but at 21 I had an E36 328i which I insured for £700.

The E30 is setting me back £500 this year though as I'm going for a normal policy on it because it is my 'daily'. :)

The lowest of the low E30 I could possibly get (pre '87 carbed M10 316) will cost me £4000 to insure as a new driver with no NCB.

That's in a reasonable situation as well, keeping it in a secure car park in the day, in a garage overnight, no more that 4000 miles a year, with a named driver with over 10 years no claims.

For comparison, a 1.0L Lupo would cost me £2600 for the first year, and an E30 325i would cost me £1500 after I get 1 years no claims.

At the moment i'm not sure if I should skip the 316 and drive a Lupo for a year, and jump straight in a nicer E30, or if I should start in a 316 and then consider swapping the engine/suspension/brakes etc after I have built up some no claims...

Suspension and brakes etcetera I can do quite easily with my Dad, for the engine we have a close mate who is a car mechanic and i'm sure he would be very reasonable with price.

I hear/read this kind of thing a lot, and I don't understand.

I can't get classic insurance on my cars because they're all dailys. I've been with LV for 7 years, and in that time the most my insurance has gone up is £12/year. This year it went up £10 to £225. I've never had contact LV to get the premium reduced.

Every year, before I get my renewal, I start to get quotes and every year I'm surprised when my renewal comes through. This year LV were over £100 cheaper than any of the other quotes I got.

Also, I've been getting quotes for an E46 330d, and they're coming out cheaper than the E30!!

Am I the exception that proves the rule??
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

I've never stayed with an insurer longer than 2 Years - I thought Esure might be the exception to the rule when they were cheaper than I could get anywhere else 2 years on the bounce and then the 3rd year they ramped the premiums through the roof for no reason at all.

I've just sacked Aviva for my daily driver as 1) when I downgraded from my 330i Sport touring which was insured for £5k and business use to my current snotter Volvo V40 1.8 valued at about £800 and taking business use off the policy they took great pleasure in telling me there was "nothing more to pay" :x Too fookin right - what about the refund ???? - they then couldnt explain how a 115bhp snotter was the same price to insure as a 230bhp BMW.
and 2 ) When the renewal came in they wanted £380 to insure the Volvo turd - Admiral have done exactly the same cover with the same excess for £207.

Insurance companies are all thieves - in my experience theres no loyalty from them so its always worth shopping around and I'd still sack any insurer that reduces their price if you tell them you've got a better quote - that just says they were ripping you off to start with if they knew they could do it cheaper.

No, just illustrating what I've said before, that the criteria and algorithms that insurance companies use to determine premiums are beyond all human comprehension, using so many obscure variables that these threads are almost pointless.
The only two conclusions are, don't blindly accept a renewal quote, and shop around. If you can't be bothered to do it yourself, get a broker on the job.
