I got refused an MoT for having a Scorpion exhaust... "Exhaust noise is clearly in excess of that emitted by a similar vehicle fitted with a standard silencer in average condition"
F1 Autocentres, they also failed me for my steering lock not working.

The noise test is subjective, but they're definitely wrong on the steering lock - only applies to cars built this century.

I think what they're getting at, is they're not from the Zone approved list of wheels you're allowed on an E30

sounds to me like they are trying it on and taking the p1ss. Best bet would be to try another MOT station as andy said

There won't be a reading. As I said in a previous post, the test is subjective and purely the opinion of the tester.andyp wrote:so when they noise tested this exhaust sytem what reading did they give you,
If you get VOSA involved, then they possibly will take noise readings under controlled conditions, but note that the wording of the test doesn't refer to any legal sound limits, just to what noise the car should be producing. For instance, a Rolls Royce should fail if they can actually hear the engine is running from across the room.

RR with a decent exhaust would sound almost like a Bentley...pacerpete wrote:Brianmoooore wrote:There won't be a reading. I emailed Vosa about the exhaust noise and the steering lock, they said the same as you Brian about the steering lock, but they told me to go to the Department for Transport about the exhaust, I have emailed them too but yet to get a reply. Vosa have told me to appeal if I disagree with the fail, while I do disagree I'm not sure I can be bothered to deal with the hassle of all the tests they will do. So I'll just take your advice and go to a different testing station. Thanks for your help guys.

If it makes any difference my brothers 3.0L mk4 Toyota Supra has a HKS Super Drager 3" straight through exhaust, which is the loudest I've ever heard and that passed fine.
Sounds like your MOT tester was a misinformed zealot. Go elsewhere.

My Skyline was tested at 138dB and passed. But as it's an import and shows up as a Nissan 2 door saloon, they have no idea what it should be, therefore can't say what it should sound like as standard. Always passed no issuesmcbonio wrote:If it makes any difference my brothers 3.0L mk4 Toyota Supra has a HKS Super Drager 3" straight through exhaust, which is the loudest I've ever heard and that passed fine.
