I'm currently looking to buy all the parts needed to convert my 318i m40 from auto to manual.
The car I'm looking to get the bits from is the 318i touring which Sskoda is breaking on here. I've just been told that he's discovered the diff on there is a welded one which will be no good to me as I was after a diff aswell.
I'm wandering will the gearbox and clutch and all the other bits from a touring with a welded diff be a good choice or is there a chance that it will have been ragged to inches within death and be a potentially problematic gearbox/clutch.
Can anyone give me some advice as to whether I should go for it or what is the best course of action, look for another, or should it be ok?
Thanks in advance!

The welded diff. in itself shouldn't have hurt the gearbox, but the type of owner who welds their diff. isn't likely to be the type of owner that treats the gear shift, and any of the rest of the car, with much mechanical consideration.
Whenever I buy a car, I look as much at the owner as at the car itself. A policy that's always served me well.
Doesn't only apply to knuckle dragger types of course, there's someone who lives very close to me who just can't seem to get the idea that it's clutch first, followed by gear lever. I wouldn't be too keen on buying a gearbox from her either.

To be fair, the gearboxes are strong, so don't command an awful lot of money as there isn't the demand for them, so picking up another gearbox from somewhere else for cheap shouldn't be too hard.
This one, if it's had a welded diff, it's been owned by someone who's sole purpose has been to go sideways, so expect it to have spent a lot of time at the top end of 1st and 2nd gear, and no doubt will have suffered numerous clutch kicks ( rev the knackers out of it then drop the clutch hard)
