I purchased the restoration bible recently, whilst reading through came across a tip on how to cure a slow returning steering.
If you have a steering which is slow to return to centre after turning it could be down to a dry bearing.
The tip was to drill into the column and fill with WD40.
My steering is slow at returning to centre but I always put it down to a worn steering rack, I was going to try the suggestion made but wondered if anyone else had this sympton or tried the tip?

I discovered that the back of my cabbie's steery wheel was rubbing on the column switches,two clues;
Horn would sound randomly
Witness marking on the switch casing
The cure was simple,I added an extra washer!
By splitting the steering system into smaller sections,you should be able to decide where your problem lies,so pop off the track rod end ball joints and swing each wheel in turn,then try turning the steery wheel,the section that still feels stiff is where your problem will be.You can further isolate the column from the rack to eliminate the rack if need be.

As above Andy would know but is the column not open at the top where the steering wheel bolts on? There should be a plug there to stop the noise ingress up through the column?PG325 wrote:I purchased the restoration bible recently, whilst reading through came across a tip on how to cure a slow returning steering.

Column is hollow, but it's a long way to get grease down to the bearing from there. Spray cleaner followed by spray grease from the engine bay does the job.
First symptom of this bearing needing attention is an intermittent horn, which varies as the steering is turned. Earth return for the horn push is through this bearing.
