Someone just told me they bought an M3 rack because the wiki says they are the best, wasnt very impressed when I told him they are in fact just a standard E36 rack with less lock and are a complete waste of time and money....
From the wiki -
Fitting a faster rack from a BMW Z3, E36 (non M) or E46 is a common and simple upgrade, but for those looking for bigger increases, fitting a rack from an E36 M3 can bring dramatic improvements.

The current article is pretty much the original Zone Article from before the Wiki even existed, just copied across in 2008. Looks like it needs a heavy re-write or replacing with E46 info.
If someone has a good writeup WITH PICS on installing one of the other racks, let me know.

Dave i've got some pics of an E46 rack with Dan's pipes fitted, rack sitting on a table so you can see how the pipes fit, you can have them if you think they could be useful

I've seen people selling e36 m3 racks for big money in the classifieds on here too, people assume because it's an m3 part its going to be worth more.
As soon as the weather improves I'll be whipping the rack off my e36 m3 and fitting an e46 067 one i bought ages ago

cheers,
harry

This is true but whats the benefits of an e46 rack over an e36? And does it have to be a certain type of e46 rack?

the standard e36 and e46 racks are the same, the benefit of fitting an e46 rack is that its newer so less worn out that's all.
the e46 compact/clubsport rack however is 3.0 turns over the standard 3.4 turns. this rack can be identified by its purple tag and 067 part number.

I have heard a few times that the e46 racks have more feel than the e36 ones, possibly from a different cut on the gears?
both e36 and e46 are quicker ratio than the standard oil tanker style e30 rack.
cheers,
harry

How does steering feel on an E30 with an E46 rack? I've got an E46 and I much prefer the steering feel of the E30, even though it is a bit slow. If I fit an E46 rack to replace the E30 one which is now pissing out ATF will I have a faster steering E30 with all the feel of the original or a numb E30 with E46 style feel?

Isn't that the case with the Z3 rack a well? I know when I had one on an E30 it had a reduced turning circle over the standard rack.

If you've got them to hand send them over Paul. From what I understand the E36 and E46 pipes route the same.

You have obviously never seen or used an E46 rack in that case, they are different visually, internally, and feel a lot nicer to drive with
