Halfrauds have a special on all professional tool sets - 50% off. The 150 piece and 90 piece set are amazing value. I've been using this stuff for years and it's never let me down.
If you don't have a set of good basic tools, this is a great starting point, and comes with a lifetime guarantee on all but the ratchet mechanism in the ratchet handles and ratchet spanners.

my tool box isn't so portable any more so i'll be taking advantage of the 150 piece one this time,i have the swivel type ratchet spanners and they are a godsend
think i'll check out the rolling stock in boxes while i'm there compared to machine marts offerings with vat free offers

In other words,if you bugger the bit's you are most likely to abuse, you are not covered....Topblag wrote:....... and comes with a lifetime guarantee on all but the ratchet mechanism in the ratchet handles and ratchet spanners.
I have a Britool half inch ratchet in my toolkit that I bought more than 40 years ago,it's battered and the chrome has worn off in places, but it still does the job.

I have always found Halfords professional tools to be of ample quality if you don't have the wonga for Snap-On/Mac Tools.
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Yeah but to be fair, most decent sized halfrauds stock the ratchet mechanisms.daimlerman wrote:In other words,if you bugger the bit's you are most likely to abuse, you are not covered....Topblag wrote:....... and comes with a lifetime guarantee on all but the ratchet mechanism in the ratchet handles and ratchet spanners.

My 150 piece set is 15 years old now, no rust on the chrome, and I undid head bolts with a 2ft bar using the 3/8" ratchet and it didn't flinch and still works perfectly to this day.

as above.
Been abusing a couple of halfords ratchets pretty much daily for 5+ years now and only done one ratchet.
The mechanisms come to about £5 on trade as well.

They are very good value for money but they are not really conparable to snap on
I've got a mix of snap on / draper pro. I got all my draper stuff before halfords started making tools. however If I buy anything these days then its snap on, simply because their guarantee is cast iron. I've use flat head screwdrivers as a chisel, broken it and was given a replacement

i buy clarke professional from machine mart, find them a little bit better than halfords and sam,e guarntee, but my best most used tool purchase was the halfords pro 1/4 drive rachet set half price from £20 to £10, perfect for e30 use/trim etc

Love my Halfords Advanced kit. Only issue i've found with them is all the 3/8 and 1/2 drive sockets apart from the impact ones are 12 points. Much prefer 6 point sockets, which halfords don't seem to do at all...

exactly ! we all know snap on are the best, but only people who use tools a lot on a daily/professional basis would need themKedge wrote:

That's just it! I've had the same Halfords socket set for 10 years now, still going strong after lots of abuse. All that's needing replacing is the odd torx drive I've snapped, done under guarantee.polsta wrote:exactly ! we all know snap on are the best, but only people who use tools a lot on a daily/professional basis would need themKedge wrote:

agree, ive got normal chrome vandium sockets i had when i did a work expirience at a garage 18 years ago they gave me a set at the end of the week, ive used many times over the years, still going
, most mechanics have only got snap on coz they build them up on the drip over years at work from the mobile vans, i dbout theres many people about that have never worked with cars/normal jobs, that have a load of snap on tools

Depends on your budget really. I know of three people who have never worked on cars for a living and have a lot of Snap tools in their collection.polsta wrote:i dbout theres many people about that have never worked with cars/normal jobs, that have a load of snap on tools

The boxes they come in a appear to be included in the guarantee too... Two of the four catches went on mine and they said they'll order me a new one... Although I haven't had a call from them yet that I was promised to get a fortnight ago..

Of course bad , we'd all have a snap on collection if we were minted, then again if we had no budget the m3 alpina we'd also have would just go in to BMW for any little bit of work and we'd not need any tools

If I won big on the lottery I would still play with cars. The workshop would be epic and fully kitted out.

From what I've heard you don't need a lottery win for that, just an ample back passage and a ticket to an all you can eat buffetdiable wrote:I'd just employ Pacer Pete to live in the garage to work on the cars, mow the lawn take the rubbish out and to chase of any intruders.bimanut wrote:bss325i wrote:If I won big on the lottery I would still play with cars. another thumbs up for halfords pro tools. I bought a 150 piece last year and use it most weekends for odd jobs, only had a problem with the small ratchet whereby it sockets wouldnt stay on, took it back and was replaced FOC
out of interest, can you still use trade card for tools if the tools are on offer already???
i quite fancy the swivel head ratchet spanners from Santa

Got one of these sets not so long ago, not bad for the money and handy to throw in the back of the motor.
3/8 ratchet is not to happy these days, guess I should of used a breaker but that was the other side of the workshop!
Good tools, and cheap so not a problem when bits get lost.

Haha, same. Half hour or so spent dossing around seeing what was on special each week. I think I bought all my tools on special offers, probably saved me a couple of K over the years.magpie wrote:i used to love the snap on van day at work
