Well my old e30 cab has gone to some use in the end it needed a new roof fitting and painting (it was in primer ) for too long ,I had done a m50 engine swap on it but never found the extra £1000 spare to get the paint and roof sorted ,as i was always buying other toys and then when i got the e30 bug back i bought a tech 1 sport .The cab just sat there ,then a friend who builds hotrods got a job in to build an Etype jag , but the jag was (still is) just a shell so he needed a base ,what better than a nice very solid e30 cab with a decent motor, anyway a few pics of where it is so far if there is any interest i will update it,if not remove it .The owner wanted the Etype to look unrestored hence the new metal is going to be kind of rusty .

This is the jag as he got it

The old E30 1990 or 91 i forgot ? car but was a pre facelift for some reason,I had the rest of the kit to go on just never did fit it as i was more interested in making it go fast,it started out as a 325 but for some reason it was an utter snail much slower than any other 325 i have had.

few more from today the trial fit for the body will be done soon apparently there is about 1.5" difference in wheel base with the e30 and the jag ,it was kind of sad to see my old e30 in so many bits there is a pile in the corner of cut off bits. You wouldn't believe how strong that chassis is and its a good design too ,it also had zero rust anywhere i couldnt believe not one bit but there was none at all .

I think its the jag i know for certain the jag is 3" wider on the rear wheel arch ,that i could not believe until i seen the tape measure ,i personally dont like an etype jag (duck for cover) i always thought they were narrow compared to a mighty e30 ,this project is about two weeks in i think we could see it taking very good shape by xmas ,it will be getting a custom loom and we just found today the rear screen heater for a cab bm is an excellent little unit that will be the screen demister .

From Carfolio:

E30 Wheelbase: 2570mm Front track: 1407mm Rear track: 1415mm

E-type 2+2 Wheelbase: 2667mm Front track: 1270mm Rear track: 1270mm

So, the E30 is wider, but 3.82" shorter.

Surprisingly, both weigh about the same - E30 = 1209kg, Jag = 1245kg.

The guy has SERIOUS skillzzz. Shame the 2+2 E type is such an ugly bloater :( I am guessing the 2+2 remains were very cheap whereas a roadster, no matter how foooked , is lots of money.

Definately looking forward to seeing this progress.

im not sure on costs on the etype side of things ,that rear track thing will be right on the wheels but with the arches if you go edge of arch on both the jag is a bit wider ...or that one is atleast they were hand built apparently and you can tell on this one the boot lid is from another one and the hinges dont are not even close to fitting the holes in the lid , it will have some nice wide wheels on the back to fill the arches anyway ,i am looking forward to seeing the jag body on the e30 that will give a nice clear picture of things to come and i suppose thats when the hard work starts .
Mike always impresses me when i see his work ,i will try get some pics of bits of fabrication he does on the build .

Mike has seam welded the chassis and any joins for extra strength the car will have a full cage in anyway when its done but more the better with this sort of thing

So little update from Mike ... trial fit of the jag onto the e30 plonk it on top and it seems the e30 is a little high at the front end for the bonnet the body will sit lower when he chops some more bits out and the track looks too wide on the second pic but it looks different in person and will be having totally different offset wheels on .

Image

Image

so original top of the inner wing
Image

New version to accommodate the low bonnet fits well now

The guy has an e-type shell, can afford to have some serious engineering carried out and is using an e30 because....? Is it just because its better for his budget or am I missing something?

P.S that might read as if Im being arsey Im not, just interested if there is another reason or if the e30 is genuinly best fit for the purpose.

Interested to see the end result. Good luck!

I think if you read the OP's initial post, his E30 cab just happened to be sitting about going spare, so was chosen as the donor for the chassis, regardless of whether or not it was the ideal choice for the job or not.

It may or may not have been chosen because it as available, but it seems to be a good choice:
Front engine , rear wheel drive layout.
Wheelbase and track close to original E type.
A well designed, stiff chassis, even after molesting, since it was extensively redesigned from the saloon chassis to compensate for the loss of roof, unlike some other cab. designs.

318isPMK It doesnt sound arsey good question really , Brian and speedtouch have got it really ,the lad doing the build is a friend of mine and was looking for a donor car ,my old e30 cab was just sitting there .It was very solid with zero rust and already had a m50 engine in . the Jag shell was just that, i think the guy got that cheap anyway as it was just a bare shell with just some other odd and ends with it .It was decided the e30 would work because of being a cab it would have a strong chassis and it turns out it was very strong just about perfectly matched the Jag wheel base (that was just luck really),but yes front engine rear wheel drive ,disks all round ,parts are cheap upgrades are readily available he got the e30 for £650 so even all the bits he doesn't use he will make alot of his money back.
in the later pics when the e30 was stripped down to bare bones it sat 4" higher then when it went in thats how much weight has gone.

I will be going down to see him again in the next few days im very curious to see what he is going to do in the sill area as it doesnt look right in the pics this is the latest one i have seen from him .

Image
see what i mean with the sills i am sure he will sort something that looks right just not sure what yet
Image

Thanks for all the interest too
