Cabby owners with hard tops, why?

Serious question. Why would you buy a hard top?

I considered it when I first bought my cabby, but I'm lucky enough to have a decent size garage and fortunate that unless its torretial rain and a blowing a gale I don't have any leaks.

For me then the only use I may have for a hard top would be over the winter when the weather is really bad and I wanted to preserve the soft top. This isn't feasible though, for half the cost of a decent hard top I could buy someting to smoke around in for the winter and sell on in the spring without losing too much money, if any.

Anyone else think like this?

A few reasons:

1. It looks better than the soft top (only my opinion)
2. Its quiter with the hard top on
3. The car stays warmer in winter
4. Protects the soft top from the shitier weather.

Personally I don't have one as I'm merely a skint peasant and the cars more of a garage queen, and doesn't get used over winter.

hard tops serve no purpose for me, but like Rtaylor (apart from the skint peasant bit) I don't drive my car in the wet or bad weather.

Some of us are not fortunate enough to have access to a garage to keep the cabby in over winter (otherwise i would definatley buy a winter hack)

doesn't seem to be loosing any value..if anything its an investment

feels just like a coupe in the winter months

don't have the hassle of having to look for a cheap winter hack and then sell it on

I have a hardtop, I bought one because in Scotland we enjoy lots of rain and for shows, meets etc I want to use the car.

It also provides a bit more stiffness on the car with a hardtop.

The hardtop was the best thing I ever put on my cabby. If I lived in sunny climes, I doubt I'd have one.

Having ventured north of the border on many an occasion I do see your point, in particular I always find Glasgow miserable.

But if its that bad why not get a tin top in the first place? Thats the thing I don't really get. I totally understand the parcticalities of a hard top (I had one for both my spitfires although it only ever got fitted when they stood outside or I was welding the sills and floors) and my folks have one for their MX5 (they're both pensioners which is a reasonable excuse) but if you buy a converible version of a saloon surely you've made that call because of the lack of roof?

I also completely understand that a hardtop isn't likely to loose much money, but surely for the vast majority of the time its an expensive, difficult to store ornamnet?

I just bought one and I have to say it makes a massive difference in the cold weather. I completely understand not seeing the point of one if your car is garaged in winter or not used in the wet.

I bought my car to drive it, so that means all year round. The hard top is a worth while investment for the colder wetter months.

The cabby is in my garage as on the odd occasion when the sun does shine in Scotland, it's a lovely place to drive around the coastal roads with the roof down, enjoying the smooth straight six in a comfortable and motor which always attracts compliments.
