Hi Guys - My first post even though I joinned a while back!
I've just been surfing the site and can't find anything about resetting the sevice lights?
I have a 136,000 miler 318i touring and am using it as a workhorse and therefore have just serviced it myself. I hear you can use a split pin to bridge the correct terminals to reset the service lights. I realise you can buy a tool off ebay but a DIY option is always better for me if anyone knows how to do it?
It's a shame not to maintain the cars fully stamped service history but I am so taken with it that I want to keep it and do an engine conversion in the not to distant future - hence self servicing the car just to tide her over!
Incidentally, what sort of economy should I be getting - I never thrash her (until running warm) but even then I shift up at 4500rpm max, and I only see 300 odd miles off Ԛ£40 if I'm lucky. I plan to check the valve clearances as I should think this will make a huge difference if they are badly out of tolerance.
Cheers for your help and I look forward to a long association with the site and my new project car!

Welcome to the zone!
Its pretty easy to rest the lights, just make sure you get the right points to bridge, orthwise you may fry your ECU!

Thanks alot for your replies, this place seems well friendly which is a nice change!
I look forward to having something a bit more special under the bonnet to join ranks with some of your cars.
Which is more cost effective, a 2.7 conversion or a 3.5? I'm assuming its the 2.7 but you guys would know best - I have read various posts on the details of the conversions but can't really gauge a rough costing of either.
I'm digressing now anyway, thanks alot for the links to the relevant posts on service light resetting!
Cheers

Good idea to put a fuse in the middle of the jumper wire when reseting too

i always short pin 7 and 11 (ingintion off, short it, then on 7 secs, repeat to reset oil service light) but beware cause when you look at the cap on the older small cover you will read it upside down, the actual pin configuration is correct only when the cap is screwed on. this works for big and small plugs. (the big plugs have the numbers next to each pin inside the plug itself)
and i use a paper clip, cause i am brave!!
