Ok i heave been getting considerable hassle from the police in my local area and i am contemplating selling up and going oem to an extent anyway - i will keep my btb 6 branch but i was thinking of getting the boysen centre box and some other oem replacement back box. i am hoping it wont be to bad as it will be on the 2.7 (ported 320 head) and i'm hoping its not going to kill power? what do you think?

i live in ireland - infact people are being prosecuted now for loud exhausts - i have a mongoose sytem (that i love) however it is somewhat louder than oem and the road traffic act currently states that any non factory modification is illegal - the law is being ammended here in january but probably to an even more draconian level- i want easy living not looking over my shoulder, if the 325 exhaust isn't that restrictive then i will have to go with that
is it?
is it?

I c, well in that case then you wouldn't be completely road legal, it sounds crap though but I would avoid being prosecuted.
About how restrictive a 325 is, that is a technical question which can not answer myself, I would say yes, they are restrictive, otherwise mods for them would not exist.
I hope that helps mate, sorry to hear laws there are getting seriously hard

You must be joking ?????liam012 wrote:the road traffic act currently states that any non factory modification is illegal.
If the Exhaust has the CE mark on it, then it is legal, even in the Rep of Ireland.

not anymore
my mate lived there and goes back ocasionally. the new law form january onwards states that any modification that isnt factory fitted is illegal and your car gets impounded until you can get the bits to swap them round!

IIRC and please do a search on threads on this zone, the O/E exhaust is not restrictive, and indeed many aftermarket 'performance' exhausts actually lose mid-range torque.
They sound louder and people think they are going faster, when they are not.
Post this in 'technical' as well?

I dont think they are too restrictive but dont have any proof, sorry.
But if you decide to sell your old system, I will be very interested as ive split mine!

m5 pilot is the expert here (Sal) but my exhaust on my Alpina was a stainless job, sounded ok, but ive have gone back to OEM, yes its sounds quieter but got a nice burble to it now, feels much more responsive and howls over 3 grand

I have a standard system on my 2.7, sounds lovely, as Hap has said, as soon as M5Pilot sees this he will tell you the standard system is a great design.

I too have standard 325i exhaust on my 2.7 and find it to be an excellent system, although it is a 3 piece in readiness for a 6 branch
.
I wouldn't recommend the Boysen centre box if you want a nice sounding system, I find it to be a bit on the quiet side. The best sounding centre box I've heard is the cheapie from GSF !.
Cheers,
Iain T

I found the standard boysen system sounds great, had one on my sport, and also got a boysen centre on the touring. The design is top, boysen are the original suppliers to BMW, and are not restrictive at all, has has been said, most aftermarket systems seem to loose out on torque.
I'm sure billgates could comment as he now has the car with the full standard system, quiet yes, but sounds great when giving it some welly!

@orange curry - sorry mate! thanks for ur help
@Iain i think noise will actually be an issue as i would like to souund as inconspicuous as possible (with a nice howl after 3500 would be a bonus!) so i don't have to adjust my driving to tame the mongoose! its funny it has a quiet spot at 3000 but just under or just over its lurvley - unfortunately lurvely also attracts attention and has had me pulled over so thats why am changing.
@simon - that really is super news mate - you cannot believe the difference the mongoose made to my 320i - i mean an incredible difference - i was hoping that changing to a 325i boysen system wouldn't be as much as a step back as changing back to a 320i sytem esp as i have the btb six branch!
what i am finding hard is identifying the correct centre and rear box that i will have to get from gsf or euro - am i right in presuming they should mate up fine with the btb six branch
thanks for all your help

I fitted an eisbacher rear section (2 pice zorst) to my 88 320 touring last night ..
Its basically a replacement OEM style system
Must say the car feels more resposive and has more torque as far as I can feel (esp in the 60-100mph area) I imagine the 325i one is similar-the car appears smoother at low RPM, and builds rapidly to a pleasant crecendo
