Since I bought my E30 just over two weeks ago, the temp gauge has been a little iffy. It was reading about right, but would twitch about a lot. Yesterday, I took the instrument cluster out to check the two little nuts on the back. Both were more than finger tight, and nice and clean looking. However I did remove the nut behind the temp gauge, and refitted it. I put the cluster back in thinking I had wasted my time, as there appered to be nothing wrong. Today I drove to Swindon and back (280 mile round trip), and once the car had warmed up the temp needle sat dead on half way all the way, without the slightest twitch.

So I've fixed it, but cant see I did anything.

Those screws are the Earth system for the clocks. Basically the flicking gauge (mine does the same - must sort it one day  ) is due to them being loose.

i think i might do the same, as both the fuel and temp gauge are a bit erratic on mine.

But the screws arent the only part of the earth circuit. That nut is also part so by r+r it you've improved the earth ability.
