Hi guys,

I need my rear screen replaced due to the heating elements being broken. Not desperate for it now but will need to ensure it's done in time for winter. Emailed Auto Glass for a quote and although I knew it would be reletively costly I didn't think it would be this much! See part of their response below;

"Thank you for contacting Autoglass® recently via email, to obtain a quotation for the replacement of the rear screen replacement of your BMW E30 3 series. Based upon the information you provided we are able to give a price of:
Retail Price: £734.34.

As an incentive to our customers we do offer discounts, please find the discounted prices below:

Online Discount Price: £518.54.We can offer a further discount if you wish to drive into one of our branches or if you have glass cover on your insurance; we may be able to replace this glass for your excess amount.

We hope you find this quotation acceptable."

Not sure I'd trust myself to do a good enough job! Anyone care to give any of their own quotes however to supply and fit a replacement rear screen?

cant you get it done on insurance ? if fully comp/classic policy, it doesnt effect no claims/go down as a claim

or have you tried to fix the element ?

If you find the heating elelments only partially work you can fix it with silver metal conductive paint for a few quid....
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

When I bought the car the rear element was already fcuked including the bits that connect onto the screen - they were broken off.

I have fully comp insurance... so if someone were to throw a brick through my rear window it would get replaced with no effect on my ncb? I thought that was just for cracks on the front windscreen?

I doubt autoglass will stock this, they'll buy it from BMW, and add their mark up and fitting.

If it helps you at all I have a brand new genuine BMW rear windscreen seal that you can have for a very reasonable price, once you find some new glass. PM me if you're interested :D

i work for autoglass and that is a very high quote
go through your insurance mate, it doesn't have to be smashed, you don't even have to deal with your insurance company, just give us a call and book one in, we'll take care of the rest, if you want a new screen at the same time then crack it and book both in, one off payment then :D

for those among us that are worried about shit glass (which some is) just request a good brand, pilkington etc. explain its a classic car and all should be good. if your rubbers are tired or perished then tell them, new ones will be issued if available.

i know auto glass may of done a shit job for some in the past but if nothing was said at the time then sucks to be them, i know i wouldn't except a pants job.

if the fitter is anything like me then he/she will take pride in there work. I've worked my way to the top so i get to work on stunners like this

hope that helps and good luck.

I have a good rear screen with working heating element, if you would rather go doen that route.
However, I'm sure you will understand why I would not post it. It would have to be pick up only.

Driving to work one winters day about four years ago my rear screen suddenly shattered, and had that done on the insurance. Had to wait until the following day though as they didn't have one in stock

They are about £70 from my wholesalers, who have depots in London. Front screens are about the same or less.

Hi Clive,

Thanks! If you know anyone I could call that takes care of North London that would be ace but no worries if not. Appreciate the advice anyway.

Thanks to the rest of you too for the offers etc. Think I'm just going to wait a while for the moment.

Cheers,

Nick
