Are they up to it? I've pulled a trailer which weighed 470kg alone with most of a 3 foot high brick chimney in it, my 325 seemed to cope ok, still braked alright etc. Im hoping to pull a caravan chassis trailer (300kgs?) with a stripped out and lightened mk1 fiesta on it (700kg?). . . .

So, i suppose what im asking is, is it safe to pull a ton with an E30?

as long as it is a braked trailer, it should be ok.........

Auto or manual? If auto then do not allow it to go into overdrive, I.e keep it in a low gear/higher RPM otherwise can burn the clutches.

I've towed well over a tonne thousands of miles around western Europe with the red touring in my sig. I've also done a few hundred miles towing a drop tailed trailer around England with other E30s, the odd E36, and on one occasion, an E34 on it. That combo must have been two tones.
Never had any problems!

All very encouraging :) thanks chaps. The car is a manual, and about to get all its rear bushes replaced, so should be up to the job. . . . I promise to get pics of the forthcoming jacknife calamity . . .

your not supposed to tow anything over the actual wieght of the car? So 1 ton will be ok as a touring is about 1250.

A 325i auto will happily pull another e30 along i've done it several times!

Also bear in mind that depending when you passed your test you may need to pass another test to tow over 500kg.

There's all sorts of recommendations, but nothing actually written into law per se, until you reach 3.5 tonne GTW.

There's all sorts of laws and regs now. I can't keep up with it all, but I thought it was something like a max of 75% of the towing vehicle weight?

I towed an e34 535i over a distance of 450 km the car is more than up to the task. just take it easy, they can feel a little nervous with a lot of weight.

I've had an E30 convertible on a trailer on the back of my 318I auto Touring.
Also had EWOK on a towrope behind it too.
Currently slumming it in an E46 Touring
