Will the carpet of a 4dr fit a touring ( Up to the rear seats?) or will I have to trim it back?
Also, I flooded the floorin my jeep back in Oz, and pulled the sponge off the backing. Is this advisable considering my car is starting to smell like damp carpet??

Im not sure with the BMW's but my last car was a MK1 Astra GTE and the first thing anyone should do with those is remove the sponge type soundproofing as this holds water for years and rots the floor. As I say though, I not sure if the BMW soundproofing has the same problem.

well I've pulled up the carpet, and the sponge is holding a LOT of water. Found some broken glass so am thinking that the water is from the lack of window once, BUT.. Having said that, I can't get the gas pedal off to remove the carpet.. Any ideas??

there is a circlip at the top right hand side of the pedal that will come off and then you slide the pedal to the left and off the shaft, so the pedal is then free of the connecting linkage at the top, you can then pull the carpet up and over the pedal

Nice.. so its just got a grommet type thing, you have to pull the acrpet back down over the pedal, then wiggle it to fit around/under the pedal?

once you've unhooked the pedal from the top it will lift away from the metal bracket on the floorpan. just work it loose from side to side carefully so as not to damage it. re-fitting is the reverse - in the best haynes tradition.

wish you posted that earlier! Just busted my gas pedal. Nothing a piece of gaffa tape didn't fix! Anyone got a spare pedal??? It was also stuck up against the firewall under the centre dash. i just trimmed it. I know it's not right, but I was getting p!ssed off that i broke the pedal and the rain started falling yet again! Not happy jan!!
Erm.. What metal bracket on the floorpan? All I got was a plastic one! Which snapped almost clean thru!

sorry to hear of your troubles - not exactly sure what you've trimmed from your text.
i remember a metal bracket welded to my floorpan about 12mm high and 50mm wide with square holes in that the accelerator pedal attached to - so i assumed they were all the same.
i may have a spare pedal that i took from a scrappy one time - i'll take a look. pm me if i don't repost today as i will have forgotten as unusually for me i've started drinking early and i can feel it already.

Officially the accelerator pedal should be replaced when ever it's removed. It's not an expensive item from the dealer, but in practice if you can get it out by wriggling it sideways, then it's OK to re use.
In answer to your OP, saloon carpet and touring are the same. (I've used saloon in a touring).
Don't worry about waterlogged carpet rotting the floorpan from the inside - this is not an Astra. BMW floorpaint is quite good enough to protect the metal.
If you remove the carpet comletely, then leave a small area under the heater - you won't get it back in. Cut around with a Stanley knife, but carefull of the wiring underneath.

Thanks Brian. thought this was the case. Was getting frustrated by it not coming out from the heater. There's no rust to be seen, but there was a lot of water in the sponge. Worked out (after having torn the pedal hinge) that there are 3 clips on the pedal. You pry these back, (2 on the front outside, one on the rear middle) then lift the pedal off. Wish I knew that before!
