is on a car for sale on ebay at the moment,

I've wanted this plate for a long time, what to do?

he wants at least £2500 for the plate to stay on but he's reluctant to sell it separately, awkward bloke.

it started life as a 320 auto and is now a 325 manual with rotten inner arches and an mtech 2 kit

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/e30-1989-BMW- ... 256ba324d8

is it worth it?

Just depends how much you want the plate, I guess, and how much the money means to you. It isn't worth that money for the car - but anything is worth what someone is prepared to pay, so if the plate is that important to you then it could be worth it to you. Private plates and all sorts of collectables are very hard to value as they only need one buyer to really want it and a whole new value level is set.

I have no interest in private plates, so it wouldn't be worth it to me, but you like them and this one has initials that mean something to you, so maybe it is worth £2500 to you? This might be your last chance for years.

Sorry, I know that that is not very helpful!

The registration is E3 ODK that would be fine if your car is an 87/88 car.... But for me personaly, changing the 'oh' to look like a 'zero' and shifting it over to the otherside of the plate is just 'doctoring' a plate.

Doctored plates are a bit of a pet hate of mine, and as so i wouldnt pay anything for the privilage. When i bought my wifes Mercedes CLK it had V34 ELK (which i just new someone had put on the car to change the 'E' to look like a 'C' needles to say i sold it and put a regular plate on it.

Just my opinion, sure loads of people on here will tell you to go for it..... maybe some are even bidding on it as i write this?

hahahaa, that's cvool man, cheers for your comment,

private plates aren't that important to me either but when it's e30 and my initials kind of makes it a no brainer.

I'd give the bloke £500 for the plate separately as it was on dvla 3 years ago for £399 which is what he paid for it.

I don't know if I can justify the £2k for the car, it's clearly not worth that kind of money otherwise it would have had bids by now, it's been on ebay since saturday.

Following richard300's post above, it's also technically illegal as currently spaced, although in practice unless the vehicle is involved in a crime you would be very unlucky to get pulled up on it.

Depends how bad the rust is, but as it is rusty and nowhere near original spec don't make the mistake of thinking that if you paid him £2500 you'd be getting the plate for £500 and the car for a reasonable amount!!

A 1960s Ferrari GTO that placed at Le Mans is around £10m, an identical car that did not place at Le Mans might be £6m. You're getting the same car, the difference in value is down to significance to the purchaser. There's no such thing as a bad deal if the purchaser is happy that they got value.

£2500 for a number plate, but you do get a free 325i manual with it, which has some goodies... Personally I would ask again about selling it seperate! Whats the point in paying all that money out for a plate that cost 400 quid when new.

If you have the money, time and space, you'd be able to make your cash back by fragging the thing but it wont all come back in straight the way. Unless you found a buyer for the car after you had the plate off it...

Seems like a lot of hassle!

If someone bids on it, why not ask the seller for the winning bidders contacts or ask him to pass your contacts on and ask them to sell it? Thats if anyone bids, if they dont, push for a plate sale seperately.

Original plates are then new cool. Every man and his dog is now riding round with "budget" private plates that can be bought for £250-£500 - A12ABC Types

Proper plates or expensive personal plates is where it is at IMO

yes jim, that's a good plan,

I did initially think that after throwing some money at it might make quite a nice chariot in the long run, certainly looks nice in the photos and it's got some nice bits on it,

I just sold my 320 to a chap on sunday so i've free'd up some cash and wouldn't mind buying it, I just mainly wanted to get peoples opinion on the price of the car and whether i'd be throwing money away by buying the car just for the plate,

not sure what to do, if it has no bids i'll try get the car and the plate for 2k, i think that'd be worth it imo.

I wouldn't want to pay £2k for that car! It's a fragger or a money pit with shot rear arches!

But fun to bring back to life over time. And if he has his dream plate on it he'll stay committed until it is mint. We're talking a difference of a few hundred pounds overall, what price happiness lol?!

Hmmm, I wasnt trying to justify spending £2500 on the turd to be honest! Its a rusty 320i Auto converted! You may aswell spend your 2.5k on a very nice 325i SE if your looking to buy another one... And then try to get the plate on a seperate sale!

My advise was you'd be able to make your money back over time if you broke it but dont expect it within a few weeks/months...

And thats only if you get good money for things.

I'd really push for the sale of the plate seperately! If he isnt willing to sell it, ask him for the winning bidder if any and see if they'll sell it!

i suppose, whatever i'd end up doing with it, it's always going to be a mongrel,

I'm not looking to get another one just yet, just wanted the plate for my 325i.

if i get bored over the weekend and the weathers alright, i'll take the trip to devon and see what it's like in the flesh, i'm sure i'll be able to sort some kind of a deal out with him.

^^^ The above would maybe worth it for £2k if it was a genuine sport, but it's a 320 with no MOT and a vajazzle. There is no mention of how it runs, servce history, just a list parts that have been fitted recently, has it got 325 brakes and suspension?... Genuine or bodged repro Mtech kit, makes the difference of £500 of it's frag value?

Excluding the boot it does look nice in the pictures, but I would spend a long time searching out rust in the areas you can't see because a nice paint job could be hiding terminal issues/mountain of filler or bad repairs (unless the seller has resto pics).

Great! the plate says E30, but to me it's worth fook all as my initials are KS, how many people are in the market for an E30 with the initails DK if that's it's USP?

Private plates, especially on E30's, make the car practically unsaleable in my opinion.

The added value that the seller puts on the car by including the number plate will only appeal to a very limited number of buyers, and its hard enough trying to sell a spivved up car already, without the added cost of a plate almost nobody wants around its neck. Just look at the DVLA site, theres 354 E3 O?? numbers available, whats the chance of him hitting on another person who will want his plate?

The car is worth a max £1500 on a very good summers day, less than £1000 on an average to bad day in January, and that number is worth £400 retail on DVLAs books plus a small premium to you perhaps. If he sells the number to an agency for resale they'll give him £100 or less!

If you seriously want it, offer him less than £2k, say £1750 and wait. I'd be very surprised if it sells, and even if it appears to on Ebay, probably won't in reality.

Anyway, I agree, the new cool is original numbers on E30's

I can't help but make certain gestures with my wrist when I see a car with private plates. The Americans have got it right, calling them Vanity plates, and for me they devalue the car. If the owner is prepared to fork out that sort of cash just so that everyone knows his initials, what other genius ideas has he had for the car?

When it inevitably doesn't sell, contact him again for the plate and offer 500 quid on top for the car, but nothing more than that.

Don't you need a current MOT to transfer plates off a car? Just thinking that the plates are going to follow that scrapper to China if they don't get shifted in a hurry....

Take your 2 bags and use it to improve your car, or whatever, there are over a million ways you can use that money and enjoy it, buying a number plate is not one of them, especially when you have to ask if you should stretch your finances to buy it!

Good point, if it doesn't get MOT'd again, and car gets scrapped, the number returns to the greedy hands of the DVLA, where you'll be able to buy it at £405 including the transfer fee whatever it is. Result!
