Where did the Insurance Sticky go ?

Seen plenty of people on here talking about classic policies with sub £150 a year premiums.

Apart from Lancaster who I'm with at the moment who should I be looking at ?

I should fit into the low risk category - 36yrs old, 2nd car, clean license, car garaged, reasonable postcode, low mileage PA, not used for commuting etc.

In terms of "mods" should I be declaring stuff like M3 Eccentric bushes, Eibach Lowering springs, Bilstein B4's ( arent these direct replacements ?? )

Who here pays under £200 a year with sensible mods declared on a 325i and who do you use ?

Finally if a car is on SORN sure I read somewhere about them bringing in rules to say the car still has to be insured ? - Has this started yet ?
Insurance is due for renewal in Feb but I don't intend taking it off SORN until 1st of April and I'll be getting the head refurbed over the next few weeks anyway so may not bother re-insuring it until then.

If it is SORN then it does not need to be insured Rob.

I would declare the eibach springs and M3 bushes.

pete best are brilliant, try carol nash too , how many miles you say makes a big difference in prices for classics

i only wanted to drive my sport about for 3 months till winter when i got it to let tax and mot run out and enjoy it , before garaging and a refurb, ecar wanted £110 a month i think pay as you go, pete best with 2k miles was £150 odd !! :D

with classic policys, whats the expirience on here with going over the miles ? do they check at all ???

I've previously insured my E30's on the basis of 3k PA but never got anywhere near that - I think the first year I had the bronzit I did just over 2k but in the following years just over 1k pa so this needs looking at.

If I can get it for around £150 or less I'll be very happy with that.

I bet insurers would only check the mileage done in the event of a claim - which they could then do very easily via the MOT database and use it as a reason to chuck a claim out if you go over what you declare on the application.

Not worth it IMO.

i think they would only check if you was to make a claim. then if you were over the agreed ammount you would not be insured. you can up grade it if you are getting close to the agreed millage, but will mean more premium

reason being- ive done that milage, but looked at it as paying £150 to drive it around for a few months enjoying, the clocks in the car that have done last 2 mot`s, are not its originals, which were included with the sale, and ive now fixed , so im putting it back to original milage for next mot, but i also made the insurers aware of this when i got the car and they made a note of it on my policy

but- how does having your own policy, and then the car being driven by another insured person who can drive any car ? -ie clocking up milage , fit in ? (if you said that)

i would guess you would have to set that up at the beginning of the policy. although i would have thought it would be differcult to get it agreed.

obviously this is illegal, but you could put in some old clocks and then put back in the original millage ones closer to the mot.

Thats just an almighty bodge.

You're insuring the car to do a maximum number of miles per Year regardless of who's driving it.

Insurers would kick out a claim on principle if that was the excuse you tried to use for exceeding the milage limits - you're just asking for a load of aggro.

I'm with Pete Best as well, paying just over £220 a year and that's being 26, second car, 1.5k mileage, no commuting and not a great post code it seem's looking at the renewal on my Leon after moving. Also have break down cover and legal cover in that, they said i couldn't remove the break down cover for some reason, legal cover was about £15 IIRC. No one else could get it below £500.

I had to provide them a mileage reading when i took out the policy.

ok i get that, only had my licence 3 years in march comming, so not expirienced with insurance etc

Just work on the principle that insurers make profit by not paying claims.

Anything you do to bend the rules or give them a reason not to pay out on a claim will do 2 things - boost their profits and remove any chance of obtaining competetively priced insurance in the near future.

My standard Motorsport cab is insured with RH for less than £110 on a classic policy. Re the suspension mods - they've quoted me on a MK2 Golf GTI with and without uprated suspension the difference was only 10 %.

They're worth a call.
